Come on then @hootbe tell us about yourself and where you're from? are you/have you been affected by land or property flooding from poorly maintained rivers? I'm fortunate never to have but have seen it on many occasions and helped with the clean up. Only a stones throw from the back garden a neighbour had to move out of there home for a six months when a lump of fallen tree blocked under a bridge and when the river backed up blew out there garden wall and patio doors and sent 3ft of water through there house. yes it was a freak occurance but now then can no longer get insurance there terrified every time the river level rises. Do you have to live with that fear?

It would take many yrs to get them back to near how they should be I think that’s the problem as a government is in for such a short time they wouldn’t get the Recognition for spending on it. They Are just hoping they do t get a big flood in there short time. We get some land 1/4 flooding from un maintained brooks so serious issue for us. I would like to see them all working properly. recalculated engineered to take the water. Specially from new house building projects.

Years ago you had local chaps who had their length of road, river and railway to maintain. They were on a wage and took pride in the work, about 20 years ago it all got contracted out and has all gone to s.hit. Rivers are blocked, embankments are a jungle and roadsides are so overgrown you have to straddle the white line with anything like a load of bales etc.

Article on Paul Rackham in this week's FW.
On one hand the EA can force you to do work you don't want to do as a Riparian owner, but if you do work without a permit they can fine you tens possibly hundreds of thousands of pounds, and yet they themselves can apparently carry out work breaking their own rules, make an almighty cockbup and yet seemingly get away Scott free by burying the reports

Now now... be nice 😊
Having spent best part of £35k on a renewable energy project that was rejected because of nimby and banana (build absolutely nothing anywhere near anywhere) types, the Majority of whom didn’t live anywhere near us (London, Brighton, York 🙄) and a majority of local objectors who have since moved away, your stance strikes a nerve.

Incapable of seeing beyond sensational headlines and the squawking of individuals and charitable organisations who make tidy livings through stirring up antagonism where none would otherwise exist. You see “rich farmer flouts law for own ends” coz that’s what your bubble tells you. Many members here will see “exasperated farmer hung out to dry for carrying out much needed remedial work to protect farmland and benefit wider community”

I’d love to know what your day job is.

assuming your in tier 1 of society ie 4/5 day week, never work a weekend, overtime a swear word, 28+ days holiday, bank holidays off 1 or 2 “well deserved” foreign hols a year. Mooch about places on your many days off, probably in expensive oil based berghaus gear, pontificating on rewilding, hedgerow loss and species decline and the effect of “industrial agriculture” on the environment. Then hop back in the car and head back to an environment made completely of concrete and tar, oblivious of the utter hypocrisy.

It is worth pointing out that:-

a) Mr. Price pleaded guilty to all charges
b) One of these charges were as a result of breaching a Stop Notice
c) He didn't do very much to gander public sympathy with his initial comments following the incident, coming across as bullish and arrogant
d) He was previously successfully prosecuted for un authorised works by the EA in 2007 resulting in a £10,000 fine

I think if farmers have any common sense now is the time
to ban any one from going onto your farms regarding any type
of survey work .The results of which are used against the landowner in restricting
the maintenance of the landscape and waterways which had been on going for generations before.
I have now banned all such organisations . (y)

"coming across Bullish and arrogant" are not how i saw him, He is neither,
He just doesnt suffer fools.

Many of those who were tied up in the Post Office scandal pleaded guilty too. Had they not they would have faced a prison sentence.

Pleading guilty and actually being guilty are not the same at all.

The difference here is that he has actually admitted to doing the work. That point has never been in doubt by either side.

His statements at the time tell a slightly different story...

“They are not going to beat me,” Mr Price said.

“They don’t know who they’ve taken on here. I’ll pull them apart.

“They’ll know who I am by the time I’ve finished with them.

“I’ll look after the local Environment Agency and Forestry Commission.

“I’m not happy about this. I’ll get them to lose their jobs.”
