Robotic milking

As @nonemouse says seem better
No failures yet
Robot IDs the cow noticably quicker
Rumination & Heat data transfered regularly, not just when the cow is in the box
Receiver can "see " the cows 400 m away.
Option ( which we don`t have ) to locate an individual cow in the shed or field. Think it needs another 2 receivers for this so it can triangulate the position

Has anyone had any experience or is it even possible to replace collars (qwes?) on lely a4 to a Eid eartag reader and stand alone heat such as cow manager? 6 years on and out of warranrty and quite a few of mine are starting to fail. They seem to lose heat detection first and eventually Id... just thinking thought options before I ask lely for a price!

We tried this when we fitted our second hand A3 Nexts but the range on the reader wasn't good enough to pick up the ear tag so we used the ISO collar which never need replacing.
I have always wondered whether instead of putting the EID tag in the cows ear but instead clipping it through the collar near to the weight it might have worked as the ISO reader fits on the trough under their necks - ear tags were only a couple of pounds each. If I remember right the eartags need to be FDX tags to work

Can anyone recommend an iodine based teat spray please and prices. Lely’s 2 iodine based sprays are twice what I’m paying for blue guard. I’ve been on Blue guard ever since I put robots in 7 years ago so have no experience with iodine. I now have digi on the cows udder suddenly and don’t know where it’s come from but I’ve been told an iodine based spray will help it heal.

A question for all the merlin users (or anyone for that matter).
What duration does your teat sprayer run for? Mine runs for 0.5 seconds per teat. I think it could be set down a bit but would like to hear others thoughts before adjusting.

Chippy how bad is the digi on udder? About 3 weeks ago I found 4 cows with it on the udder. It’s a pain to shift it. I’m still treating them daily for it. Biggest problem is keeping it dry.

Some I catch in time but you only find it when you smell it so some get worse before you find it. I had a cow post Mortem done 2 month ago because didn’t know why she was so sick and wasn’t responding to antibiotics and it turned out the udder infection she had which we had been spraying etc had lead to other things. Heres what the post mortem guy said,
“The lung abscess and pneumonia are the unequivocal cause of disease and the cow would undoubtedly have died. They are very likely to be the result of bacterial embolic spread from the udder cleft dermatitis lesion which itself is reckoned to be initiated by a spirochaete. Aggressive topical (and possibly systemic) treatment of such lesions in other cows is suggested to prevent further similar losses”

I would love to know how they get it and how to prevent it because I’ve never seen it before.......

I’ve never had it before until them 4 cows a few weeks back. Like you I thought about using a iodine based spray. Have you found an alternative to Lely’s one at twice the price? It doesn’t take long to do damage to the udder. When I found the first one I checked every cow and found the others. Vet has told me that the cleaner the beds are to more sensitive they are to it.

Had it here... they transfer from the hoof when they lie down with foot tucked under udder. Cleft area ideal sweaty area etc Now try to clip out cleft area in suspect cows. Use a paste supplied by vet for digi plus spray after washing clean.... as you say dam bad to find and treat on robots!

Question for the more technical people here.

Can the Lely collars be read by the same readers as the ID tags

The reason I ask is, my neighbour has an A4 and is having bother getting it to milk some of his home grown heifers. They are great stock other than having a slightly awkward shaped bag, so I have the option of buying them if they work on my VMS300. Will my VMS read the Lely collar if i put the ID number into Delpro

@Chips , kilco tricide is now not alliable from manufacturer.....some rules have changed.

Damm , hadn't realised that . When we switched to tricide it coincided with our cells and clinical rates dropping away to almost nothing which was unheard of here . Now mastitis is always a dark art and you never really know what caused an improvement or deterioration in infection rates , I also switched bedding manufacturers at the same time while stopping drying cows off in the crush , so could be anything but it makes you very reluctant to change anything too. However my buying group has just changed suppliers and when they told me they couldn't source tri cide I put it down to the supplier and so I have switched to Evans Pre Post Gold for the last month with no adverse effects yet but always in the back of my mind was to go back to another supplier to get tri cide should things deteriorate ,it appears this is not an option , fingers crossed the Evans product does the job , the supplier told me it was their closest equivalent to tri cide
