Rock dust saves the planet

A local farmer apparently did a trial with it via Farming Connect, applying to part fields and measuring grass growth with a plate meter. I am told that the grassland that had the magic dust applied yielded 2t/ha of DM less. Those carbon credits that you can sell through @Clive 's shiny suited mates had better be worth a lot money if they've got to make that up.

I doubt they'll be supplying much locally. :censored:

The shiney suit sales are selling carbon flow not sequestration

If someone has researched this and there is some genuine work backing this up they know of, I would like them to explain it to me because the whole thing mystifies me as it stands. I'd be grateful, particularly if the chemistry involved was explained along with the process involved as it removes CO2 from the air. If basalt does this, surely real-deal lime or similar would also?

Lime I can understand, it's calcium carbonate and usually reasonably soft and dissolves. That makes sense. Basalt is hard, so hard it's used to make roads and stuff? If it works in soil, can we dump the stuff in the sea and have it work also?
Lime is actually a source of emissions apparently, not absorption.

A quick glance at the UK official GHG Inventory and liming is there at 1.1 Mt in 2019.

its basalt,
im not sure what if any the neutralizing value of it is. limestone releases co2 when it reacts with acid in the soil, so that isnt helpful on the climate change front.
And the climate benefit, of course, is that every ton of weathering basalt can remove about 0.3 tons of CO2from the atmosphere. To show what this might reasonably add up to, the researchers spitball a typical application rate to two-thirds of the world’s croplands. That could pull about 0.5 to 4 billion tons of CO2 per year out of the atmosphere.

That’s not a huge number when you compare it to the approximately 41 billion tons the world is currently emitting each year. But the authors note that analyses of how to limit global warming to 2 degrees Celsius call for about a 1 billion-tons-per-year reduction from agriculture by the year 2030. That's approximately what this could provide.

Two thirds of the world’s croplands doesn’t seem to amount to much then does it? And Henson isn’t even being paid for his "services" to the planet? Meanwhile someone else is….

Who says it’s all about the money?

Jebus, they want to cover 2/3rds the world's total arable area and it will bring in 4 billion tonnes tops?

This.is.insane.

No they don’t. It’s just that some bright spark wid nowt better to do did a quick calculation on a calculator. There’s a lot of that about. In many different fields. Make an assumption and multiply it by a gazillion.

The key thing is that Undo are getting paid by an idiot committee somewhere who think they can therefore justify telling everyone their horrific fossil fuel burning is Net Zero.

I've rumbled this climate lark. Nailed fair and square.

Let me outline it: I sell you a product that is real 'on-message' right now and trending hard yet literally made of thin air and you pay me money for said product. I bank said money and scarper into the sunset (Dominican Republic +/- some offshore accounts and a whizz-kid accountant regularly threatened with death to keep quiet) before you work out you've just paid me money for thin air. Profit. As a side plus- several mining companies get to dispose of some problematic wastes they have piled around.

I still have a few unanswered questions though, namely: how do I get in on the action?

My side of the cwm is a slate, shale type of geology. The other side is a volcanic basalt which is slightly more basic and higher in phosphorus. On my side of the cwm every farm has been on the market since '57 when Dad bought in. Only one farm has changed hands on the other side. Place names are another indicator over there, Cwm Llefrith - milk valley; Cwm Meillionen - clover valley.

This is Kev and Petes new venture, they have been working on it for months. Kev writes stories for the papers under an assumed name and Pete is busily gearing up for a whole new tranche of spreading.
In a couple of weeks there will be another article on how these new miracle holes can accomodate all the surplus CO2 and just geuss who, has a load at the back of his shed he never sold
