So Sinn Fein spend an election campaign trying to distance themselves from the IRA and then the truth comes out when the results are announced.

What a surprise.

SF have successfully rebranded themselves as a left wing socialist party and appealed to a youth vote who knows little to nothing of their past.

After a few years of being utterly useless pass it will be a harder sell next time.

Every cloud has a silver lining. This result I think makes a United Ireland an even slimmer possibility now. Getting some of the wavering unionists to vote for it depends upon there being a visible moderation and move away from British and unionist hatred. This election will have made many rethink in light of the resurfacing of that hatred. Never mind us living in the supposedly dark ages in Northern Ireland. It's clear the republic isn't anywhere near ready to modernise.??

Not just the youth vote, SF placed a large emphasis on the health service which is in dire need of rationalisation and with an aging population it is a subject close to many hearts, as are pensions.

All things that mean so much to everyone. We’ll see how it pans out, but I’d doubt SF can work a calculator any better than FF/FG.

i wonder how many other countries will feel about sharing security info with RoI with Mary lou as (deputy)leader

while the timing of SF getting into power sucks big time, in the end it will hurt SF for years to come. A bit like when the Lib-Dems got into power with the Tories, and suddenly everyone saw they were full of BS, Much will be the same for SF. it easy to make a load of promises when you think you never have to fill them. but now that SF is/will be in power and have to fulfill those promises people will see them for the BS they are

I would like to think your correct, that they will get found out.
unfortunately we live in a post truth world these days when lies are the new ‘alternative facts’.

It wouldn’t be like SF to blame someone else or lie would it??

Now things are getting a little more interesting with Sinn Fein winning the popular vote. That's certainly put one on the noses of the two main parties who were always of the opinion that they were there just to swap the top jobs from time to time while the others scurried around as a distraction. Trouble is that like Europe splits the Tories any mention of working with SF divides both FF and FG so I rather feel that a new Irish government is going to be a long time a'coming.

No such reservations for my mate Mattie McGrath (he who avoids me in pubs) who tells the world, or anyone who is listening anyway, that a group of independents are willing to work with any old coalition that tips their cap to them.

The man talks sense. The gulf between Dublin and the rest of the country has always been marked and the denizens of the mainstream Irish media are hugely self regarding believing themselves to be the new bishops instructing the unholy and unwashed peasants of the interior on how thy should be thinking.

they won nothing ,only acting like they did, they have I think 36 seats out of 160,They are saying they should be allowed to govern but it hasent dawned on them yet that they need 81 to have a majority . They are poor at the maths but I didnt think they were that bad.
