Rolling spring barley post emergence

I looked at various forecasts last night, and also called a pal who's pretty good with amateur forecasting, and there's no reliable sign of rain for another 2 weeks at least. Just mild temps and calm winds.

I suppose at least we will all escape that band of poor weather that always hits just before T2...! That's assuming it'll be worth putting one on by then....

@Simon Keeling - any thoughts? It's getting el desperado now.

I think we need another TFF ski trip to take our minds off it...... Will we have to go to Canada now its so late?
I have a few good fields but most look like cack.

Rolling pulls moisture from below ,
There's some moisture in the ground. We did get some rain last weekend and Wednesday night. I should've upped the seed rate, but it was expensive with Austral plus on it.

What seedrate? We went at 200kg/ha with austral after grass ours has been in 2 weeks, have you had any bugs damaging it?
Supposed to have been 160kgs, but the small 6 acre field had considerably less due to calibration cock up. Haven't noticed any damage . What's it look like ?

Got some winter barley at 1-2 leaves, didn't get rolled post drilling but could do with it now. Rain forecast Saturday and I'm worried I won't get another chance. I'm normally a risk taker but not too sure on this one!

It looks as though you have some plants at 2-3 leaves, and some still at 1 leaf. There may also be some still not emerged. If you are due rain this weekend (and get a reasonable amount), then lack of moisture shouldn't be a problem, so rolling isn't going to improve establishment much. The only benefit of rolling I can see is that it will maybe make new emergence a bit quicker, and most importantly it will improve plant rooting and plant stability in the long term..

There are quite a few variables to consider, but if you are only rolling to improve crop establishment, then hopefully reasonable rainfall will negate this. But, I would still roll if I was you to improve rooting, but probably only do this when the majority of plant are 2-3 leaves. If you left it until spring, it would also help tillering and potentially more heads and yield :)

Not worried about emergence, more about rooting and lodging. Not too many stones out there but you can guarantee the combine will find them if it doesn't get rolled!
