Due to end of tenancy i've got 80 NZ Romney ewes for sale. Mainly 2 and 3 year old with approx 15, 4 year olds in amongst them.

The basis of the flock begun with Chantler's High Country Romneys followed by a ram bought from Wairere UK.

All in a Heptavac P system and would have had Toxo vaccine as yearlings. The flock would consistantly scan around the 180%. All barren ewes would have been sold (following scanning) including yearlings and have done since 2009.

Willing to split. £80

Pm for further details.

When does a NZ romney sheep become an English one !?! :scratchhead:

I presume they were all born in the UK, to Ewes that were born in the UK and probably Rams born in the UK.

The Chantlers and Wairere UK flocks were both started by buying sheep from Romney Marsh.

So how are they New Zealand !?!

I get your point but Chantlers have been buying from NZ for 3 decades. Wairere also bringing over NZ rams - nearly 40 to date it seems over the last 10-15 years. So I think you do them a disservice.

Both breeders have done a fantastic job for themselves and the Romney breed and have my full admiration.

But as you point out, just because you buy a few sheep from NZ, does it make the thousands they mix with suddenly becoming NZ !

Does that mean that Mr Patel's son, born in England to an English wife is still Indian !?! :scratchhead: :ROFLMAO:

If you had been using predominantly, or even solely, Texel rams on your home bred ewes for 30 years would you describe your flock as texel or would you still call it whatever breed you started with 30 years ago?

Not sure I get where you are coming from there. :scratchhead:

These are the same breed; Romney on a Romney to get a Romney.

Just because maybe the rams great grandfather came from NZ doesn’t suddenly make all the offspring Romney’s from NZ.

If that logic was followed, then all the Romney’s born in NZ should be called English Romney’s as they originated on Romney Marsh, England. Our forefathers didn’t just export rams to NZ, but all the Romney ewes as well.

I rest my case :rolleyes::D

The point is, it's not just the rams' great great grandfather. It's the stock ram, and the stock rams for the last 30 years that's been imported from NZ. Unlike the Romneys taken to NZ which were selected and bred to fit over there, rather than continually taking more from the UK.

But we're cluttering the op's for sale thread. And I don't even know why I'm standing up for them - I've gone away from Romneys- NZ or otherwise:)

The first time I went shearing in nz I was asked by a farmers wife `what breed of sheep do you shear in the UK? `I replied that we have a lot of Romney still in my area, the farmers wife replied that we'll they wouldn't be true Romney! So I said we'll they come from Romney Marsh where these ones would have originally come from!!!

Wouldn’t it be:
Originally a UK Romney ewe and NZ Romney Ram.
Then a 50/50 (NZ/UK) ewe bred to a NZ Romney Ram.
Then a 75/25 (NZ/UK) ewe bred to a NZ Romney Ram
87.5/12.5
93.75/6.25
6 or so generations and you’re onto pretty much full NZ genetics no?

Seen some pure Romney lambs the other week here in France , they looked liked pure rubbish!!
I saw some between Tenterden and Hastings on the weekend @Wooly. I’ve always been told they’d survive on FA, well some I saw were 0.5-1 BCS and didn’t have a lot more than FA!
I did see some nice looking ones around Ashford way but they must’ve been incredibly thinly stocked on the ground as the grass hadn’t grown in months!
