Rotavator 90 inches

Hello,

Does anyone still run or used to run a 90 inch rotavator? If so what size (up) tractor was on the front? Would an old John Deere 2140 stand a chance of powering it? Standens documentation states up to 90 hp at the PTO for the 90 Powervater.

Looking for one for small area grassland rejuvenation

Thank you

I have a Howard 60 inch behind a 35 hp kioti and it's not laboured. That's on ploughing for spuds.

Depends on your soil, and forward speed.

I don't see why not if tractor is in good order, we use to run 60 inch on 47 hp Leyland around 45 years ago (Christ that makes me feel old).

Father bought a 100" howard years ago second hand , on the understanding that our 75 hp renault could use it, was no problem, even had it on a DB 990, but couldnt pick it up! Anyway, dependant on power, youve a 4 speed gearbox, so you can slow the rotor, and drive forward slower

No probs good bit of exercise for your 2140 I had a 60 but upgraded to a 80 now and my 2140 loves it. Mind when those rotavator so we're new tractors were far smaller anyway

I have used an 80" Howard Rotavator on a DB780 (47hp) for grassland rejuvenation work cutting off the old sward at the growing point and creating a shallow tilth for the re-seed.

Need to get the forward speed / rotor speed combination right though !

See, our DB's of that size simple could not cope with a 80ins around here, they would be dead as you dropped the rotor in.

Why, I wonder, can some do it and others cant? Different ground, I guess?

1st gear (maybe 2nd, I forget) on 6 speed 780 with clean air and fuel filters, 2 blade configuration on rotor and match rotor speed through careful use of Howard gearbox cog combination so that blades (standard profile) cut, then lift vertically out of ground on each rotation. Lower machine into work on the move and lift also on the move so as to not stress the tractor dual-clutch.
Far from light ground....but needs to be fairly dry.
Few people actually understand how Howard intended the Rotavator to work and then they end up creating a pan.
