Rouging contractors

Are there any about. I know British Sugar use teams to do beet.

Would be good to know if this is something I can buy in for a know cost per ha.

I think Atlantis is about 50 quid a ha. Min wage is about to go up to £6.70. That's 7.4 hrs per ha! Most of my black grass is in distinct patches and last year I sprayed 175 ha which did naff all to the black grass.

Any advise would be welcome.

I rate a field as "rogueable" if I can reasonably expect to clear the BG in about 3 hours per acre - thats three "passes" at an hour per acre. Different if you were to go in with a napsack to actually pulling it out. You may do well to ask BS as BG roguing and weed beet will be at different times of the year.

There's a gang here on Romney Marsh, not sure on cost yet, but I have booked 20ha in for a trial rather than pacifica, as it was going to cost about £1200 all in for the chem and application, I decided that would buy quite a bit of rogueing, and no resistance.

Time will tell.

Badshot in principle this approach sounds good for BG control / reduction but I feel due to the germ/growth habits of this problem any
roughing gang cannot clear enough to make any difference. (ie 1 plant left produces ?? seeds /square meter)

That really depends on the level of infestation, if they leave less than the pacifica then i will be happy, and as that will leave better than 50% it won't be difficult. I will go round the fields a few weeks after them with a pump up sprayer to knock out any survivors if I get chance. Where I am doing this I have low levels and probably only on 20 % of the area, any really thick patches will get glyphosate.
To be honest, I'd sooner give my money to some locals than a multinational company at the moment.

Badshot, We used said rouging gang last year to tidy up 40ha of marsh wheat which had some massive plants that had survived an early spring Atlantis so we knew this blackgrass was going to cause big issues in future years - they were very effective. Highly recommend them.

If it needs Pacifica, I would be inclined to spray the spray, *and* pay for the roguing. That way they can concentrate on getting them all. I am spray operator, so if I see any through the season I can mark on the gps and go back and get them later.

Hand roguing blackgrass is very different to doing wild oats. You need very good conscientious gang to remove it effectively as you have to ensure that the whole plant is removed. It is too easy to pull the seed heads and then it just re-seeds below the canopy. I have used Andrew Watson from Cambridge and that was on a known price per acre quote, again the price is more than wild oats because of all the stooping but if you want to remove the potentially resistant leftovers from a spray programme then it is worth it imho

The other issue you've got is that by the time you come to rogue the BG has already cost you a lot of money by competing with the crop. At least with spray you catch the weeds before they do too much harm. I think @static is right with his suggestion of doing both if needed. Greater cost I'll admit, but you'll get to the bottom of it quicker and should lose less yield that way. Roguing after spraying should be quicker and cheaper too :)

Andrew Watson's gang are the only one I know of but I was forgetting the name! Do you mind saying how much it cost please?

Surely These gangs would work on a day rate as well as per Ha? so both could be used and strageler's taken out by hand later on. But saying that every field has a different amounts of bg so quotes would need to be done per Ha after viewing field. Hope that makes sense, I know I would't want to quote for rouging a field without looking first.
