Paraquat, glyphosate resistance found in country's worst weed

One of the country's worst weeds, ryegrass, has been found to have resistance to two common and extremely important farm chemicals.

The surprising bit is it is also Paraquat ready. Paraquat is banned now but having used it extensively when it wasn't I am surprised to see resistance to it.

would rather have a few docks than nothing but ryegrass but each to their own

A lot of Dairy farms sow nothing but ryegass so they can cheaply spray the docks

Not really a problem on an all livestock farm , best option with in an Arable Rotation is use short term Rygrass which will burn itself out anyway

Would be interesting trying to establish brassicas by glyphosate and direct drilling afterwards.

Might give them a miss for now…..

Barley grass.......bain of my existence. I call bs on ryegrass being a weed too. My dream has been roundup ready ryegrass....

that's not the point , clover is another plant that can 'out do' even recommended label rates of it,especially without adjuvant help.

Not sure where we going with this , but I'm working on direct drilling without using sprays , the word can't be done I find an interesting challenge, next week I'm drilling 5 different types of forage crops into a grass ley , it will probably fail , but onwards and upwards,

Which just goes to show that foreign produce is NOT produced to the same standards as UK and European, even in Australia. For a start, Paraquat has been banned in Europe for many decades, certainly in the UK. Secondly we would not use Glyphosate in the way recommended by that Australian leaflet on any significant area.
What do they expect but to get resistance developing from such apparently profligate use?

This is why the plough should be used at 2 to 3 year intervals. Or a 100% kill of all weeds during the season - might be accomplished with regular tilling prior to the next crop. The operative word being "Might" .. used a lot in Climate Change propaganda - actually means not going to happen but unlike IPCC propaganda there is no large sack of money attached.

If the seeds that have been exposed to chemicals are not buried and rotted then the promotion of new weeds DNA will tend more and more towards resistant strains.

Seeds don't rot when buried, roundup will have no effect on seed so if you soak a seed in roundup and burry it will will grow just the same if it's ploughed up again In 10 years , just did not want people thinking that ploughing in anyway reduced a seeds ability to grow when it's exposed again
