We have just completed the installation of a 1MW GSHP Heat and Chilling system for a dairy processing plant in Huddersfield. The plant processes 65 million litres PA. As we are members of the RABDF the case study on this installation will be in this months newsletter.

The owner of the processing plant has various renewable technologies already installed - solar PV and biomass boilers, and the addition of further renewable technology, which still attracts a very good RHI revenue stream, is a further measure to enhance the sustainability of the business, as well as making very healthy savings on heating and chilling costs.

Whilst this client purchased the GSHP system, we can offer a "fully funded" package to dairy farmers, dairy processing plants (cheese processors etc), and the system works equally well for potato growers/suppliers and grain drying farmers.

So you pay a sub to RABDF
How is that relevant to the product you are selling ?

It simply shows we support the sectors we work in and as the product in question could be beneficial to the dairy sector we have sent all the details in respect of the product to the RABDF for their consideration, and latterly we joined the said organisation.

I would be interested in finding out more about the package being offered here? Could you either share the case study now or confirm what usage a farm would need to have to make this type of system worthwhile.

We are in the process of writing up the case study for Dry Hill Farm but I will post and overview.

For us to assess the suitability of any farm for the fully funded model, we would need to have the following data to produce a desktop model;
1. What is the primary operation of the farm?
2. If dairy; how many cows and total milk production?
3. If grain drying; total weight of grain dried per annum?
4. Current heat use?
5. Current chilling costs?
6. Current costs of power per kW?
7. Any planned expansion/reduction in current operating model?
8. Geographical area of the farm?
9. Is the farm owned or tennated?
10. Contact details.

Once we have the above we can produce a desktop model, including financials, which we can then send to you, plus an outline on how we can proceed should the desktop model be of interest to you.

GSHP Heat/Chill Dry Hill Farm;

The Introduction.

Buckley and Son (Watson Dairy) based in Huddersfield process 1,000,000 litres of milk and cream per week at their Dairy Hill Farm processing plant.
A 998kW Heat/Chill Heatpump has been installed with 26km of in-ground pipework to benefit from the Government backed 20 year RHI scheme to pre-heat the pasteurisation process, heat the packing sheds and hot water.
The free by-product of this heating process is chilling. This is used to assist the chilling of the milk, cream and cold stores.

The Process.

This solution is fully automated to provide efficient heating and chilling, maximising and monitoring every aspect of the system via an in-house designed and built remote access control system.
To maintain the required chilling by-product, 50,000 litres of water for the factory processes per day is being heated. At the times when the heatpump is heating, there is 100% fossil fuel replacement.
80% free chilling while there is a heat demand down to 0ºc for the milk, cream and the cold stores results in increased savings.

The Figures.

- £ 2,704,043 pf projected income and savings with the 20 year RHI Government Tariff.
- A 4 year payback.
- 35ºc at 350% heating efficiency.
- 1º at 300% chilling efficiency.
- Total energy efficiency of 650%

The Conclusion.

An intelligent bespoke 'controller' ensures that the system is operated remotely for all tariff monitoring and peace of mind, a true 'Hands-off Heatpump Heat/Chill solution'.
The 20 year maintenance and extended warranty package means that there is no unexpected expenditure, for the lifetime of the tariff.

Quote from Stephen Buckley;

"A system that operates seamlessly alongside my existing technology. The remote access means I can continue to operate my business without concerns about tariff monitoring. The installation was completed on time and on budget and I was highly impressed by the calibre of of the onsite team. This is a great solution for businesses trying to add another undisruptive income stream."

* Vale Energy Ltd introduced the GSHP Heat/Chill system to Stephen Buckley and managed the client relationship throughout. Vale Energy Ltd now offer a fully funded GSHP supply and installation option for dairy farmers, potato growers/storage and grain drying farmers.
Vale Energy Ltd are now quoting for supply and installation of further renewable technology at Dry Hill Farm.

We have had a number enquiries re the GSHP, including the fully funded model, so I thought I would post our initial response to enquiries, prior to any in depth conversations with farmers.

A GSHP system, either a 500kW or 1MW+ unit can provide heating to the parlour, calving shed, workshops etc.
Pre heating hot water for wash down and drinking water. To qualify for the RHI a 500kW GSHP would need to demonstrate that combined heat and HW use is needed at a certain time of the year. units only need to run for 1314hrs pa (RHI tier 1 threshold) which is 75kW 24hrs per day or 150kW 12 hrs per day. Use would typically be higher in winter and lower in summer months. Our units are set up and fully monitored to ensure clients hit the threshold. Chilling savings in the region of £20k pa may be achieved for a herd of this size by chilling the milk prior to bulk storage. More uses for heat if needed could be by installing a drying floor or diversifying into other processes that require heat.
