Royal Highland Show Cancelled

Received the same yesterday. With the society claiming a bleak financial year, how much did that cost? Fancy postcards, SAE and paid envelope, donation form and cover letter. No option to pay BACS which is completely daft. Also 3 individual letters came here (mum, dad and myself) instead of one per household, and it’s all fire fodder.
Serious questions need to answered about the financial resilience of the show and the society, starting with the “heid bummers”

Father has said he wants to make a payment out of the farm account, personally I probably wouldn't but I don't feel strongly enough to argue against it, I do enjoy the show tremendously and would hate to see it fail. Seeing the high ticket prices, full stands and record attendances I had presumed the finances of the society would be in good health, perhaps it's a sign of the times that with all that said, the costs involved be it, security or health safety make everything far too expensive. Or maybe it hasn't been as well run as one would hope. There's obviously an element of bad luck regarding the timing of the new pavilion but under the circumstances I should have thought a restructuring of loans should negate this until such time as the show is up and running again. Perhaps fixed costs have been allowed to run away and the board lost sight of the fundamentals of the show. What would I know.

how will it actually work even in june 21 you kinda wonder atm.
I think all shows cancelled for 2 years is where the job is heading.
sad times but true

No hope of any shows untill at least the later part of next year and even that will be for people who have been vaccinated and it will be a one way/ 2 system/ keeping 2 meters apart/ no free food/drinks/ wearing a mask the whole time etc etc, so basically a crap experience and if they let non vaccinated people in then they will be doing track and trace and for sure someone will go down with the virus and everyone not vaccinated will have to self isolate so if you havent been vaccinated ( which most people wont have ) then it wont be worth the hassle etc of going to shows next year.

Was the McRobert Pavillon really in such bad condition, that an organisation set up to promote Scotland’s famously spendthrift and parsimonious farming had to replace it with a £5 million pound ‘work of art’?
As has been mentioned before, they were really unlucky with the timing...

It's not just the RHS it's all the other events which have been cancelled throughout the year. Gardening Scotland, gigs. The loss of these will have exasabated the cash problems.

Despite not going every year I for one think losing the RHS would be bad for Scottish Agriculture as it gives us a base to show the public of Scotland what we do.

Yes I know there are local shows which I do contribute to and support. Most of these may struggle to for different reasons. Loss of support or volunteers, or exhibitors. Speaking to show going exhibitors a lot have said how much time they have had when the didn't have to doll up animals or prepare a stand (s).. It might be a case of support the big and...

I really missed all the shows this year but to be honest, I'd much rather pay out to support the continuation of the local ones over the Highland as I actually think they do a better job of integrating farming into the community. Every year I come home from the RHS feeling I've been pretty well rinsed.

All that said, I'd hate to see it go.

Its too top heavy, too many big salaries. When the ceo is on around £150k some serious questions need asked. The recruitment process to “secure” him would have cost circa £25k alone.

Much as we enjoyed showing at the RHS it was expensive to enter, expensive to park a caravan ( don`t even mention the cost of the hotel ) expensive to eat there. Feeling was exhibitors were seen as another cash cow.
The lack of imagination with the H & S rules mean`t any potential customers were prevented from going in the cattle lines for a big chunk of the day. - Which is the whole point of showing
So no inclination at all to support them

To my mind a few 100k imaginatively spent would have turned the old pavilion into a decent space. Lack of toilets up stairs was a problem, but there was tonnes of room at the west side of the building left unused every year. It did not need a brand new building for 4 days use . A large part of the cost of the new building was the removal of asbestos during the demolition of the Mac Robert.

It's not for 4 days use though. Even the old pavilion was used constantly throughout the year. One set of big events they got a name for, and were obviously hoping to continue to pull in, was the Indian Weddings. Due to their very large guest numbers, its perfect.

I almost agree with the recruitment side of things if that is the cost, but comparing equivalent jobs that would be around the benchmark money for a CEO of a large entertainment company. As I said the RHS is only part of the jigsaw things happening all the time. Commercial company commercial renumeration.

I hope their asking some of the Indian's then to help bail them out as well as us members.

My thoughts are its run like a business too. Which I don't have a problem with.

But don't come asking for handouts from those that attend when its facing financial hardship.

If they want to raise money quickly could they not offer discounted life memberships?

It's like the farmers weekly, they charge all the exhibitors to attend. Then charge people to come in and see what exhibitors are paying to exhibit?

How does lamma manage to host a "free" indoor show.
