brought some steel beams,..13`x10``x4``and web of 6mm,brought 30 of them,my idea is to have 10 as legs, then weld 2 together to have a beam 25` long, making a clear span of 50`,i could put support beams in if you think its needed but clear span seems better.the shed would be half cubicle half clear{loose housed],i have 9`` 20` concrete panels to go inside the legs, which should help strength, finally for the roof i thought of angle iron, instead of wood,...this is only an idea as yet, better people than me advice, thanks.

If you weld them together over plate the joint on the underside at least , with say a 100x8 flat , also vee the joining ends slightly and leave a small gap to get full weld penetration.
I have definitely seen sheds with 10"x4" (and less ) rafters at 50' duo pitch span however the legs are normally wider than 4" , I guess if you place an eves support between the legs it would prevent twisting and they would be ok.
Pls don't quote me though !

Unbelievably we built a indoor arena 20m wide so about 65ft span on 10"x4" with 15ft bays 15 deg roof with metal roof sheets in 1999 and its still up as i was there looking at another job this week it was done to price match a quote from some other firm, it was that thin as bolting the rafters together on the floor would not allow you to lift them in one unit as it was bending them that much trying to get them vertical so they had to be lifted side for side and bolted together at the apex when lifted, so 50 ft would just be ok at 15deg pitch ,regarding the joint i would notch each section and do a overlap joint this would be stronger and put a plate on bottom flange for good measure and make the bottom and top haunches as long as possible split from beam

you best cut the panels down and use 15 bays with timbers ,some times you can get away with cutting the odd corner but you are trying to cut them all if thinking going 20ft bays

thanks all for your replies, think i may, make it a little different now..say,20`beam,clear span making it 40`,then put alean too,to it say 15`,that way the legs wont have so much to support,im worried about them twisting, the pitch will be just enough.the roof will be profile sheets, anyway thats what im thinking now, thanks again..if any of you have time, the more advice the better.

don't let me put you off the wider span, but stick to 15ft bays and brace both ends if your are not able to work out the length of the braces i could do you a sketch and work the length of them out for you its no bother , where about are you?
