looks like the rspb is going to start campaigning to convert bps cross compliance rules into legislation.

so much for opting out of elms and being able to do what you think is best.

not a suprise though.

Sounds like a load of waffle and complaints in the article, not very clear at all.

What exactly are they looking for?

I’m not aware any hedges will be under threat when cross compliance falls away.
i think they want to put the hedge cutting dates and 1m boundary into law

Only time I've seen a hedgehog in recent years is splatted on the roads. Far too many badgers for there to be any hedgehogs.

RSPB spend most of their time protecting and introducing raptors which kill Yellow Hammers.

Well said. All they seem interested in is how to get the most donations to keep the gravy train rolling.

Thus campaigning for “popular” agendas:

1) Keep those pesky farmers from ruining the countryside
2) Introducing and protecting big “trophy” birds that the public think are exciting

The humble robin, sparrow, blue tit just aren’t trendy enough to be worth bothering their time with because they won’t pull in the big bucks when the public can help them just fine with garden feeders without needing any organisation to donate to.

Thank you. Just googled for it and found a FW article published yesterday explaining exactly that. Much clearer.

Shock horror….even had quotes from NFU justifying why extra regulation is not needed!

The thing is, most Hedges round fields have been planted and maintained by farmers for a long time.
Nature has taken advantage of this habitat. So now its habitat first, farmers 2nd.
Its like ditches.
No ditch in past.
Farmer dug ditch.
Newts move into ditch, suddenly farmers ditch is habitat, not a part of his land maintaining.
To much stuff where the experts think farming methids destroying nature, but be no nature there if farmers not created the habitat in first place...

Got exactly that here, we dug a pond to catch/settle yard run off before it moves to river, we want to move pond as we foolishly made it to close to yard, ecologist report says pond has habitat value. not sure yet if we will be able to move it

Ain't wrong there. Remember how quickly they backtracked on their "cats kill millions of birds" statement as soon as they twigged that upsetting Doris the elderly crazy cat lady and her friends would mean a significant drop in the amount of donations they'd be getting?

Those bunny huggers on Simon Reeve drained a whole river, electric stunned the fish etc. so it seems some are allowed to…🙄
