RSPCA Assured???

Has anyone else seen the advert on TV for this?

Our vision is for all farm animals to have a good life and be treated with compassion and respect.

They say animal welfare above, but the actual home says "eat less, eat well".

Do farms have to pay for this (like red tractor) or is it either or. Seems a bit rich to charge farmers and then use the money to try and reduce the size of the industry. Its not like it says only eat UK meat - -but then I'm assuming RSPCA only applies to UK producers unlike the red tractor logo on food.

RSPCA Freedom Foods is an enhanced standard

It is audited at the farmer's expense just like RT

Not watched the ad but in principle I am all in favour of consumers knowing more and choosing a higher welfare standard meat AND understanding it's British provenance

If as a consequence of a healthy mixed diet or by paying more for their meat, they choose to eat less but better, that's fine by me

I'd sooner tackle the EUROP grid and supermarket weight specs that mitigate against slower maturing native breeds of livestock

Careful what you wish for. Any move away from EUROP grading, will be toward meat yield assessment. I suspect that will penalise those rare breeds even more.

So if you have this I take it you don't need Red Tractor?

I'm all for having higher standards and highlighting UK sources. However:

Is all about reducing the amount of meat you eat as a message.

That is from the first slide on their home page by the way.

I've not heard about the meat yield one, but a move toward grading measurable eating quality, tenderness and flavour I would wholly support. The EUROP grid is only as good as the assessor and very arbitrary in my opinion. It's disliked by producers and butchers and unfathomable to the public.

The RSPCA have been infiltrated by hard core animal rights fanatics. Such individuals control the board of the charity.

These people seek to end all human/animal interaction, including livestock farming and pet ownership.

Like many other radicals they are moving away from direct action and not seek to legislate their objectives. Hence the increasingly onerous dog breeding regulations, the PR drive to eat less meat and the consistent spay neuter mantra. This includes neutering pups of 8 weeks, despite the clear evidence increased complications as the animal ages.

If you are a livestock farmer and you support these people you are sowing the seeds of your own destruction.

The old Freedom Food scheme did result in a useful premium (for pigs). Recent developments are very worrying and owing to the looming world pigmeat shortage I’m not sure that we need RSPCA assured so much.
All the auditors that I have experienced are very good.
Red Tractor is developing a higher welfare option which might be something to move over to.
