Ruddy Washing Machines

Just bought yet another washing machine for Mrs Muck today (early Christmas present ;) ) . What is she doing wrong with them, they only seem to last her about 5 years and their is only 2 of us in the house now. The thing is perfectly level, she claims to never overload it or have an unbalanced load (whatever that means). Last 2 machines have both been Bosch and the drum bearing has failed on both occasions. Should I buy her a dolly tub next time?

That's about all they last these days, the same with a lot of white goods. You get until your warranty runs out, and just a little extra. Everyone was competing on price, not quality. There are still guys around with the skills to fix such machines, but parts are often priced so high as to make it uneconomical when compared to just buying a new one, as when it breaks again in other year or so you will have paid for most of a new machine, so better just buying the new machine with a new warranty. Horrible business model. I believe you can get better quality stuff if you look for commercial grade, but the costs are many times higher than domestic grade products.

TBH i buy almost the cheapest 7 or 8kg under £200 machine I can find, Candy or similar (not the super cheap ones) and if / when it dies at 3 or 4 years, just buy another.

Already been there and done that with the pervious one. Problem is, most have a sealed drum (two halves glued together) so you would have to run an angle grinder with a thin blade round it, replace the bearing then glue it back together. Then test the quality of your work with hot water at 1400rpm!

Have replaced the bearings on a couple of machines and they've run no problems.

Brushes are often overlooked, the motor stops working so the machine gets scrapped, new brushes are usually around the £8-£15 mark and the machine is back to normal

only good thing about 'bosch' is badge on front to impress the neighbours......buy a candy then throw it away when it goes wrong.... had ours at least two years....household of five plus linen for one small and one big holiday let..... hardly ever stops  .......did breakdown yesterday mind....blocked pump filter....took£1-05 in loose change out plus hair grip...hair band ...few other bits....she fired straight back up:love:

Got our first LG Direct Drive when they were still a novelty some 15 + years ago and it was a Manager's special and untrusted by WHICH. ( the massive discount then more than covered an annual replacement warranty extension for unlimited years so just let it carry on. Been replaced once under that £60 / year warranty with the latest equivalent model.)

Interestingly its one item thats getting cheaper relatively to other white goods, but made cheaper, most you cannot replace the bearing as its sealed together, (this also applies to £900 machines) I bought candy ones from B&Q for let houses, they are actually Hoover, for less than £250 they are still doing ok after 4 years.
