Rumen and liver fluke

Hello
Fec’d a load of thin ewes and results show both liver fluke and rumen fluke. What would people suggest treating with? Is there one product that will do both? Asked the vet and they said they’d find out which usually means they don’t know any more than me. Thanks

There is only one drug that kills rumen fluke and it is the fluke portion of levafas diamond. Oxyclozanide. This will also kill liver fluke. But adult only in both cases.

Because you will have fluke at all stages at this time of year I would suggest treating first with tricclabendazole (Fasinex et al) then wait 4-6 weeks and hit them with levafas damond.
This should first give you a baseline clear out of all stages of liver fluke.

The ewes will take some time to recover but they absolutely do recover and the liver will heal.

Would this work on a cow also?
Yes - use Zanil or similar Oxyclozanide based oral drench. This will kill adult liver and rumen - ideally 6 weeks post housing.

Levafas Diamond is great with younger stock. My vet and others say to use a pour on wormer if a wormer is required and Zanil or similar Oxyclozanide when fluke control is required.

Is levafas not a bit hard on some stock? Similar with Closemetin - I was told that an Albendazole based dose (white) would be better on young stock that you suspect a worm burden as its easier on them.

Does your farm or animals suffer with a liver fluke burden? Do you think you may have a flukicide resistant problem?

We would love to hear from you! Here at Ridgeway Research Ltd we are looking for liver fluke which are resistant to Closantel or triclabendazole. Would you be interested in sending a faecal sample to us? We would give you free results from the test AND a free worm egg count.

For more information please contact [email protected].

Thank you!
