Sounds like he needs to retire.
He'd make more money stacking shelves part time in a supermarket

its actually illegal to pay drivers by the load as it encourages rule breaking and short cutsThanks for the replies which I agree with. He says will retire next year. I think the other half of the company's drivers who don't sleep out day boys , get hourly pay. Dad asked for hourly pay and boss said wasn't against it, but it's not happened. I think it makes for less safe practice , if unsure of pay, there's a risk of pushing for.extra loads etc.
Agreed. I'm sure the Traffic Commissioner would take hold of this once raisedits actually illegal to pay drivers by the load as it encourages rule breaking and short cuts
Blast from the past! Currently got 4 in the yard, 2 are for sale with bulk Ali body’s, seen the light & got 2 on HS2/aggregate work@Mad For Muck , remember this thread now but you never came back to say what you decided to do ?
seen a advert for skip and hook lift drivers £14.75 hr and curtain siders were £15.75 im afraid your fathers age would be against him now , might be better doing some agency work and cutting back a bit if its affecting his home life

Who the fudge wants to do that! Stacking shelves in a supermarket is the common refrain on TFF, who here is prepared to actually do it? It's the pits.
I never said he'd want to do it.
Just it would be better paid, he'd not have to sleep in a layby every night and sh!t in the hedge.
There are plenty of companies operating trucks who don't oblige anyone to do that.
when last did nights out which was 5 years ago the rate was £35, cant fathom why anyone would even consider it for £17.I think the night out allowance has stayed at £17 for at least 10 years. Also pressure hose at the yard to try clean out the various stubborn stuck remains of loads is part broken so drivers get sprayed too. Dangerous wet ground. If course he reports the repairs needed but not given priority.
Thanks I know. He's never been good asserting himself around money. Think our ancestors were philanthropists, set up charities. But his mum got made to live in Irish Mother and Baby home, give up baby, befire training and working as nhs nurse. Think many women struggled to be loving to their kids after the trauma done at those punishing workhouses. Is passed down by intergenerational hidden trauma. Like poem They "m"uck you up your mum and dad, they may not mean to but they do....by Philip Larkin, of Liverpool.when last did nights out which was 5 years ago the rate was £35, cant fathom why anyone would even consider it for £17.
Nonsense, last summer there was a guy hauling grain well into his 70's and my neighbour still drives trucks. If he can pass the medical to drive he should be driving if that is what he enjoys. At least older blokes will turn up on time and know their onions.
