Running a vehicle on LPG (autogas)

Yes, Mitsubishi, Subaru and also a Dodge Ram (which isn’t ours). Mother had a Saab 93 which did 120k on gas.

Forklift tank in yard.

I can answer the second question. In the 70s Calor ran a stubble burner promotion, and installed a machine with a front gas tank mounted onto one of the tractors. This was filled up from a bulk tank in the yard. I also noticed that the reps and tec guys would top up their cars and vans as nobody kept a check on the contents of the bulk tank.
Don't know anything about how legal it would be in 2022! Can you have "red" gas?

I'm not against paying any duty more the viability of having a tank in the yard vs going to find it. LPG seems on last legs commercially

Have one of the last Classic Range Rovers running on dual fuel.
Biggest problem is the size of the tanks; both underslung tanks only give about 120 miles range at about half the price of petrol. Nearest gas pump is five miles away, two of which is through Rhyl town which is a pain, especially in the summer with all the holiday traffic.

Basically it is now a sometimes Sunday afternoon run out classic vehicle, and the far more practical everyday truck is an old Freelander diesel that does about 35 mpg and that I can fill up anywhere.

Not worth the messing about now IMHO. The vehicles I knew of all had either fairly expensive serve to LPG injection system or shortened life for some reason.

Does anyone still do it?

Also can you have your own tank fitted in the yard for vehicular use?
Talking to a chap who ran a car on lpg a few years ago and it seems there is some fuel duty on lpg.
He also had a quad bike that ran on lpg which it was perfectly legal to fill up from the household heating lpg tank but needed some sort of transfer valve/piping or whatever which could also be used to fill the car...........although that wouldn’t be legal

I ran a Range Rover on gas for some years, valve wear was the least of the problems :ROFLMAO:
biggest issue was range and if you were out anywhere often had to drive an extra 20 miles to find a gas station.
Was very tempted thought to fit an LGP tank but had just fixed the house up with wood burner and never got rounds too it. As other say the legality of it was dubious but there was no dye in there.

I had a petrol V8 Discovery with gas conversion and it was the worst pile of sh!te i ever owned.I never knew if i would actually get to my destination while setting off,and it always stank of gas inside. If you didnt use it regularly the gas used to gradually evaporate as well. The head gasket went on it and was an expensive repair. The following year it was too expensive to get through its MOT,so sold it to the local undertakers son for scrap/parts for the catalytic converters. He used to race them on some circuit somewhere. The only thing that made me smile about it was when i got pulled in for a red diesel check at Carlisle mart one day.

Yes, my avatar V8 land rover runs gas injection and it goes very well.
It's biggest problem is the lack of range due to a tiny tank, and a lack of garages selling LPG.
I will be driving it nearly two hours a day getting to current work site and back this week

you would have double the range of a non lpg vehicle

You surely had a petrol tank as well though?

We probably put towards 1million miles on a succession of Volvo 940' turbo's, V90's & 850 T5's & a Ford Explorer back in the day, all running on LPG when it was 30p / litre!

Zero engine issues whatsoever other than regular servicing - they were in about every 8 weeks having done 7-8000 miles, the oil stayed almost clear between changes! The issues come about with poor installations and there are alot of those!! They all ran liquid gas injection systems and we swapped the kit from one car to another as we replaced them.

They all had flash lube kits on them, not strictly necessary on the Volvo's but given many were turbo's it was very cheap insurance against valve seat wear.

The 940's and V90's all had their petrol tanks removed bar a 2 gallon one and a 180 litre gas tank in its place. Very rarely used the petrol.

As for viability today, don't know !

Viability is a tough one.
I love my character-full old Land Rover. It costs the same to run as my diesel one does, but sounds incredible, is much more powerful and covers the ground much more quickly.
However, LPG is slowly getting harder to find when out and about.
I have had my Land Rover on and off the road for over 22years, and I'll never sell her, but if the worst was to happen, I probably wouldn't build another now. Id more likely fit a V8 diesel of some sort.
