Russian protests

The Russian protests look nasty.

I equate Putin with Trump both bully boys.

The Russian protesters similar to Black Lives Matter or the protesters in Hong Kong.

sadly I don't think the protesters will suceed, a warning to us all what happens when ditactors reject democracy.

Very little chance they will succeed, but still a chance; few dictators think the they are on the way out when the snowball starts rolling. But to compare him with Trump is wrong, a bully Trump may have been given the chance but, Putin has killed many who oppose or merely speak against him, Trump never did & wouldn't have.

Trump does have blood on his hands. He incited a riot (not a protest) quire preditably five died.

Who knows what Trump may have ended up doing. Putin didn't start knocking off people until 6 or 7 years into his presidency, he then got the investigative journalist Anna Politkovskaya removed for getting too close to some unpleasant truths about him. From then on it's been 'open season' on people he doesn't like. :scratchhead:

I think Putin used to knock people off as part of his work in the secret service before he diversfied into poltics.

But yes Trump if given the chance would have done anything to stay in power, the good thing was how many National guard reasoned with BLM rather than followed orders to be brutal with them. US has many great people.

I can never understand how dictators keep police & army loyal to them.

Surely in some cases family will be on both sides ie uncle in police, niece a protester. Certainly in BLM protestors plenty of army officers did not carry out the wishes of Donald Trump.

Russia seems to need a Yeltsin moment (not that he was that great).

Not analogous in any way.

Who knows what anyone will end up doing, particularly those who don't have to answer to an electorate? :(

Simple, they find 'true believers', idiots, people with an affordable price, people who have things that they would prefer kept secret, and for all the others... they threaten the safety and lives of the people they care about; you need to live in a dictatorship to truly understand this last thing.

As far as I know we have never met and, clearly, we disagree about some things, but I've no reason to think that you aren't a decent, caring and loving husband / father / son / brother or what have you, I'll work on the presumption that you are a father.

Now, tell me anything you wouldn't do if there was a gun held to your child's head and you knew that the holder would pull the trigger if you wouldn't do what he wanted... it really is that simple, and that horrible. :(

I can’t understand that either. You’d think somebody or enough of the leadership would say right this is getting stupid. Let’s call a stop to it. Never seems to happen though probably for the reasons danllan explained. The tentacles of evil regimes reach so deep into society that everybody lives in fear. Sad.

Danilan mentioned the threat to a loved one.

I don't know how that would affect me. But I would really hate anyone, who tried that trick on me.

I suppose the officers are key, if they revolt, the dictator has a real problem.

North Korea been the most extreme example.

The motivation of a soldier driven by fear & discpline in comparission to say a fanatic driven by releigious beleif.

You can see how people are easily intimidated by Trump's actions against State and Republican officials. I take my hat off to the few that did stand up to him and his unpleasant bully boy tactics. Lets hope that is a wakeup call to all thinking Americans, don't take your democracy for granted.
