Rusty hydraulic ram

You could try polishing the chrome with fine emery paper (or belt even better) keep it wet with diesel. You will find the break in the chrome will be extremely small compared to the amount of rust from it.

But hold tight for more advice from others .........

Did wonder about using emery paper but thought it might open up a bit more around the rust which might allow it to spread more.?? Tried using grease before but rust still seems to appear.

If its not used daily make it so you can pull the pin on the ram end and pull the ram in before disconnecting Or put a shed up to store inside
Same old story we are paying more money for machines but they are being made from cheaper metal/material
How many machine are dragged out from the nettles every four or five rears and chrome rams are fine and you buy new kit for it to go rusty after a year or two

I have similar issue with power harrow folding rams, just make sure the rust is rubbed down before using so as not to damage the seal and a good coat of grease keeps it from further rusting when not in use. If the seal eventually fails getting a new rod made isnt that expensive.

Most of the replacement rods will rust as fast as your present one, re-chroming is a tedious process because you have to strip and polish the rod (quality of finish is dependent on this) then a base metal is laid and the chrome the thicker the layer of chrome the bigger the cost. Stainless rod might be cheaper..........

If the ram is pitted by the rust, you can as a semi temporary measure (some I have seen down have lasted for years though) - use a very fine grade emery paper to clean off the rust and de bur as Chrome plating is hard, then clean up the whole area with brake cleaner etc.
Now use a wire brush to get all the rust out of the pitted scores - the mix some strong epoxy resin, smooth over the pitted area (remove as much as possible to reduce sanding), then sand back again to make it smooth.

You may need to epoxy a few times to ensure fully flush. This method also helps prevent seal damage.

That's a good tip.
What Type of product do you mean though? Like araldite?

We tried "filling" but always find that the cavity isn't deep enough for the product to catch properly, seems to peel off. But haven't tried the above, thanks for the tips ............
