Rye

On my travels I saw this field of real dark green cereals . I presumed it was wheat . On my return journey I stopped and examined the crop , it looked like barley but wasn't. A quick check on Google confirmed it was rye .
Is it a break crop like oats and what sort of yield and value per tonne ? It did look a fantastic crop . Back out that way again tomorrow will take a picture .

Lots growing it around here now…I don’t think the yield is massive but think it’s good for the land as a break crop

grown rye for wholecrop and combining, wholecrop returned 17t/ac at cheesy stage and grain rye did 3.3t/ac with 3750kg/ac of straw. Would be near 6’ high this time of year

It might be triticale , was intrigued as I've never seen this crop locally. Its on the edge of little baurgh.

Rye is used quite commonly as a feedstock for AD plants

there is lots of Rye grown around Thetford.

i wouldnt call Rye or Triticale a break crop although they do both suffer less with take all than wheat themselves

If I gave you some round bales of rye straw to unwind over winter I bet you would never want to see the back of them again lol.

Lots around here ,all destined for the large AD plants. 100% is harvested and digested.

Rye straw is not good for bedding. Some years ago i sold 40 acres to a pigman in the field for him to bale. He was pleased as punch with a huge yield of bales.
Next year i offered him some more but he would not take it if I gave it to him
