I think this must be possibly the most difficult thing to if you employ people

I had to get rid of someone today  I tried everything to make it work but it just wasn't to be... tried to be as constructive as possible but still doesn't make it any easier.

Can't imagine how difficult it would be if it was through no fault of their own / no longer enough work for them etc.

Thoughts / experiences ?

If you want a job done properly do it yourself, other wise self employed never ever employed.

Just explain the situation and give them plenty of notice or take the cowards way , make their life a misery so they leave
These days you need to show you've tried to retrain them even if their crap, making life a misery is opening yourself up for constructive dismissal, its just not worth the hassle these days, lot better when a DCM was enough

I recently had let a self employed idiot go, it wasn't difficult after breaking a machine, laughing at another machine broken then refusing manual labour job it was very easy to tell him to f**k off and don't come back ever again, done harder things in life.

I've sacked 7 men since this time last year and it's been different for each one.

Just bear in mind that if they were any use you wouldn't need to sack them.

My advise is this: if they are not doing what they're told or if you are losing sleep over them.....Sack them.

It is now just me! Sacked everyone for various reasons and started from scratch again.

I now only use self employed subcontractors as I don't like paying people to take holidays, be ill, have kids, break/steal my stuff etc.
Hence the reason I only employ myself, I have only ever had one good person work for me and I knew he would leave and he did ! to start his own business that has turned out better than mine, hence another reason not to employ the best just leave.

I am in a quandry just me and dad have built up a small contracting business to compliment our home farm, dad isnt slowing up but should and ultimately will. I could pack in all the contracting and just do the home farm on my own, or employ someone. I dont really want to stop contracting as its been a passion building it up, it pays well and means we can justify good kit and I can only see it growing. Also I dont really like working on my own as I think you need someone turning up to help motivate yourself in the mornings and there are so many jobs when you need another person on the other end. There I have convinced myself again!! This thread makes me nervous about finding the right person.

Excellent. Here we have a thread bemoaning how difficult it is to sack people and all the problems that come from employing them. Meanwhile, on another thread, we are being told how great trade unions are and all the good they've done for workers' rights.
