Salop Trailer

Yes I have a 454 we had it new in 1975!!
Interesting
If you bought it from Severn Engineering I was talking to the lorry
driver in early January that delivered it
on the street in Newtown .
I bought reduced mince pies from
Iceland so he decided to do the same
Does the handbrake work??

I think we have a set of never used ends to convert the 6T version from grain to straw.. Our 6T is still in good nick and remains to be a useful grain trailer... We also have 3T versions in both the grain and straw configuration though these are both now getting tired.

We used to have an old Salopian trailer that originally towed behind a green Fordson TVO.
It was green in colour with a hand operated hydraulic tipping mechanism using oil from a tank mounted at the front of the trailer above the drawbar, tipped by means of a pivoting rocker arm feeding a front mounted ram. This rocker arm also had a tubular extension pipe that could be slipped over the arm to exert more leverage for tipping heavy loads, like 30cwt!

On reflection it was bloody useless when compared to modern Fergie tipping trailers that were popular by the 1950’s.
The Salopian was a short bodied trailer with large tall wheels exactly halfway along a 10’? load bed which made it a short trailer with a high loading point, so all in all certainly not the best trailer in the world, but probably par for the course in the 1930’s and 40’s.

Does anybody else remember these things?

In the 1980's Salop trailers were up there for build quality with Gull and the (early) Bailey's. We nearly went for Salop when we bought our 8 T Bailey. The Salop trailers were built on a heavy box section monobeam chassis by then with rocking axles.

Have you bought new wheels/tyres for it? Ours has 5 stud wheels and I can't find new replacements! It's a 3ton trailer - but I don't trust the old tyres with half that! Could do with a new trailer really. We have a corn bin to go on it and the bale extension - sorry, I'm showing off now!!

In my childhood I could never understand why the harvest extension and ripples (gormer's) were in red, I could never get a satisfactory explanation either.. as for grain ours had a top set of sides with a long bar, which dropped into an eye on each side to hold them together and prevent them bowing out.. it always had the compulsory bags in the tailgate corners to prevent leakage. It also had two bagging off chutes with bag clamps and although before my time they were well used as apparently despite going bulk with combines and trailers, the corn was still bagged off and stacked in the shed by hand for many years.

Massive piece of box section (y)sadly ours must have been a Friday afternoon job when they glued the drawbar too it? Was loaded with wheat on a B road , thankfully that all happened before camera phones ?

I find that a bit odd that you can't get
New wheels
Are they same wheels as Howard 100
Rotaspreader?

Assuming they're not some odd 5 stud pattern new wheels are available off the shelf. If they are an oddball any good wheel manufacturer will make wheels to suit.
5 stud rims listed here, although the picture is a 6 stud rim.

We have compared it to a colour chart and we think it is either RAL5018 or 5021, probably closer to RAL5021, that is what we ordered for ours!
We have a 6 tonner single axle from 1981. The body rotted so I put a tank on it in 2004, just giving it another repaint to keep it going for another 20 years!
I did own an 8 tonner twin axle for a few years, but the sides looked like they wanted to burst open when it was fully loaded so I sold it to a friend who had one and wanted a pair!

Side supports a bit lacking.... I never put greedy boards on the one here, possibly a sensible, all round decision!

Our 8 tonner now does duty as beaters wagon. Soon will be taking body off (out of season) and replacing with mixer tank which I have just purchased. Would Kramp have paint?? I realise time has now moved on with thread and many other ways.
