Salvaging winter oats

Hello all
Late July, early August we planted cleaned winter oats seed and beersem clover direct into wheat stubbles with no spray etc. Seed rate was 100 kg of oats per ha
Sheep are busy grazing it off but regrowth behind them has been great. To the stage where I am thinking if there is a lack of winter cropping about maybe I should try and see if we can combine these oats?

What are people's thoughts? Some plant counts in the spring and see what levels of blackgrass we are encouraging? Or is it just a dead duck from day one and to forget it?

200ha is the area, so if the idea has legs it could be significant. Picture is of the regrowth

Try 20ha and let us know? It’s interesting, obviously you need to check for BG as you say. You could ensile them if it starts to go wrong?

What were you planning on sowing afterwards? How much winter cropping were you able to put in?

I've no idea what that will look like but I'd say you've got a good option if the blackgrass isn't bad and the oats aren't full of BYDV. Perhaps an ELISA test will diagnose the virus.

sorry but I can’t see this working
From the height of the oats it looks to me like they have started stem extension / reproductive growth phase before the grazing ...the day lengths / temp in July and August would have encouraged this esp with the minimal vernalisation requirements of oats ....
My prediction is the growing point of tillers has been grazed out, and any regrowth will be weak and “secondary” and will bolt into ear quickly ...
