for the winter cover crop payment after arable/maize, going into arable next spring, we are sowing w/wold and vetches, should make a decent cut of silage, next spring, before maize, Payment £61ac.

for the herbal leys, we tend to buy the straights, and mix ourselves, easy to do, and cheaper than a bespoke mix.

think our herbal mix, because we dry out, will be c/foot, fescues, some prg, clovers and chicory plantain. At the moment, we understand, only 2 herbs required.

we have a fair few acres of h/ley already, because they perform better here, than prg/clove. Seem to find chicory and plantain, iffy year 3 and 4. On one very dry bank, plantain sown 4 years ago, is taking over, by self seeding, 4 out of the 8 acres, would have plantain, as the dominant species.

great, something green for the cows to eat, used to be nothing for them after spring, unless it rained a lot.

prg in the h/leys, we tend to find that it just puts up a seed head, when stressed, at present, there is a layer of seed heads, over a excellent feed of herbs, clovers, other grasses. Prg seed heads do not put milk in the tank, nor kg of beef on cattle. Our grazing rotation for the dairy, is about 5 weeks, ley need time to 'recover', we try to do on/off grazing, so a max of 36 hrs, on any one patch, using back fencers.

h/leys require different grazing management, and mindset. But, as time has elapsed, we use a lot less fert on them, clover obviously helping. Clover takes about 3/4 yrs, to get to max N production, unless your soil micro biology is correct.
