I have dropped my Samsung S7 phone and broken the screen to such an extent it is now just black.

It, on calendar has all my bull / cow service dates which I really could do with a)will they be on the sim card (I doubt it) and b) a new screen costs more than a new phone so can I download it of the phone trouble is I cannot see to open it.

Is the information on the phone worth more than the cost of the new screen? Value of the phone is irrelevant.
Get it done, then ask someone how to back up

Too late now but you should ALWAYS back up your phone data regularly, and particularly if it is important management data or has sentimental value. With a bit of luck your files will have been automatically backed up to your Google Cloud account so that you can access it from any phone, tablet or computer by logging in to your Google Drive account. Your Log-in will be your Gmail address but lord knows what your password is. There's more chance that you will have it written down wherever you organise your other passwords.

Takes about an hour to replace first time, about 1/2 hour for the second time around.

do you have a gmail account that you used with the phone?
If so log into google using a PC and your account details.
Then go to google calendar, you data should be there.

You can have many calendars. I have five or six synched to all my devices. Apart from the Apple, Google and Outlook main calendars I have sub calendars such as 'work' 'home' and a couple more. The beauty of this is that, for instance, my Home calendar is shared with my wife, so it synchs with her iPhone and tablet while Work is shared with my brother and his Android devices. The others are generally private to my devices only and I can simplify my timetable by viewing only a selected single [or more] calendar views. So if I have recorded events for cows on Work calendar, for instance, I could view that calendar alone without all the clutter of private appointments and other irrelevant data. All it takes is to allocate all data you upload to a specific calendar using the colours within the drop-down menu. Each calendar having it own flag colour.

Sounds far more complicated than it really is.

Is it just the front glass to replace

Buy it with the digitiser included. Don't have to try and separate it from screen. Probably be 50 to 60 to get somebody to do it all for you. Which could be easier

Yes, don't try to do just the glass, you end up breaking of it trying to get it off. Just get digitiser included. Be very careful with the ribbons to the camera speaker etc, managed to fubar my daughters iPhone speaker while changing the screen.
Quite enjoy doing it though, and when you can do the whole family's it does save some money.
