A few nights ago, my IPhone 8 was mangled. Still in one piece, but twisted all shapes!

SIM card survived!

put new SIM card in the new, phone, no contacts, searched tinternet, looked for them on the cloud, turns out the ones there are about 12 years old!!

how can I retrieve my contacts?! Do I really have to start from scratch again?

Ideally your old phone will have been backed up to iCloud. If so, it’s just a case of restoring the backup.
I had this earlier this week with a 1st Gen SE. Next day I had the replacement - restored from backup and was up and running again within 15mins as if if nothing had happened. All contacts, messages, settings, apps etc all seamlessly restored.

How do you check it is backing up to iCloud?

due to pear pressure from kids I have recently swapped from a Sony xperia android phone to iPhone 8. I think I have moved all contacts, some are now duplicated, but transferring historic WhatsApp Messages is not straight forward an as such have has a tidy up.

also not convinced I have all my photos.

Be worth checking just in case your phone did it automatically. My iPhone does it every night when plugged into the mains, and has access to WiFi.

Thanks. It was backing most things up.

Whereas with Android .... it does exactly the same ;)

I’m sure.

My point was I’m already set up with Apple so it’s quick and easy. Swapping from Apple to Android for example would be a bigger job when I’ve just crushed a phone and want it back up and running again as it was before asap.

You’ve obviously managed to sign into your apple id on the new phone so you remember the password!! Try logging into your apple id through a browser, preferably on another device to see what contacts you have there.

Oh, actually, go to settings and icloud blah blah and check that the new phone has synced or backup to icloud? Sometimes things take a few days to go back and forth unless you force them

Maybe the new phone backing up to the icloud isn't such a great idea........ might overwrite the old numbers already there..... or do they keep historical backups?

That’s what I found last time I changed phone, just didn’t seem quite so smooth going from android to Apple, but it’s probably my it skills.

Also screen on the Sony Xperia was better and this phone (admittedly second hand) needs a new battery which is disappointing. Other than keeping kids happy cant see Benefit.
