Saw this Massy 3165 digger at a sale

Saw this 3165 massy at a sale today had 900 hrs doubt genuine started on the button (hardly turned engine)no smoke prob had a engine refurb everything worked well Inc back actor had the rear arms pto etc it made £2500 to neighbour thought was cheap digger , since this covid tax on everything secondhand, not seen the 165 version before, ( scrap at £270/t was told on way home at the yard made the DB990 @ £800 look cheap as well )

didnt see sold , had a bacon roll and missed it , the zetor tractors were not over dear £14500 for the best 4wd one 1700 hrs , £13500 the other

I'm very happy with it for £3500, currently sat in our shed at home. All works well and the torque convertor is pretty strong, need to find some more buckets for it though. Driving it home 2 miles was an experience though down over Perry Hill!

my apologies i miss heard , very nice machine though , impressive starting (do you recon that engine has been recon?) ,thought it would be nearer 5g with the covid tax lol wont 50b buckets fit ?

Does start well, I don't reckon the engine has been done, at least not in the last 20 years as its plastered in oil, need to power wash it off soon.
Its a weird design of bucket, the ram pins straight onto the bucket rather than using an H link so the pins need to be a lot further apart or the ram would hit the dipper at full crowd.

Driving it home 2 miles was an experience though down over Perry Hill!

I can sympathise with you. I used to drive one that had no brakes and very iffy steering. The only way to stop it was to stamp on the reverse pedal, but if the engine stalled you were in real trouble with no brakes or steering. Once I nearly took the side out of a school bus with the *** thing.

The dry disc brakes work better than I thought, they just work better on one side more than I expected.
Steering is alright, but I haven’t had chance to check the power steering oil so I expect there’s not a lot left

The linkage above the steering ram is very critical and probably the issue

Just put 1/2 litre of ATF in the steering, works great now, even with a bucket full of muck

Father bought a manual gearbox version 3165 same as yours in 1976, great toy for a 12 yr old..spent that dry summer tacking down hedges and trees... some big ash trees took best part of a day to dig around. Perkins 4203 engine, instant starter.. never touched the engine,gearbox nor clutch, she did a lot of work, even had a sheargrab on for a few winters. The dry brakes were never good, all or nothing. Still going with my brother in law..

Sounds familiar with the brakes, I reckon mine has been used for digging out clamp silage with the bucket in the past as the front casting round the ram was absolutely full of silage and the air filter the same.
