Scanning 2021

There's been sheds put up presumably by NE to house Swales to keep them off the fells. If not they're sent away for the winter. I should think that is changing them and combined with the current fashion for them is not helping production of good mules from Swales
I know of a lot of Swales that a treated like royalty. Half of them would die if ran on a hard hill.

Crazy housing hill sheep to me but I know it’s not as simple as that.
10/12 years ago I would have said crazy housing them too, but pressure from NE to come off the fell and allotments for winter kind of pushed us into it, then that bad storm in spring of 2013 made the final decision for us. If we hadn't done it then we would probably have done it after 2018 spring. As it turns out having them housed at spring means we can keep another 150 ewes due to less pressure on spring grazing, doesn't cost us anymore to feed them, only real extra cost is straw which is partly offset with lower fuel cost, not having to trail around with the quad feeding sheep, the extra labour at lambing is kept to a minimum by taking on vet students.

And you have more muck for your inbye ground. We are similar where i shepherd, ewes come in for 3 months, grass grows and I can turn out onto plenty of parkland grass that’s rested.

I know all you advanced sheep people have long ago finished scanning but down here is the deep south we finished yesterday.
A very good result overall with a slightly higher number of empties than usual which this year is certainly not a disaster.

From shearling Romney at around 140% to Texel X in the 170% with the main flock Romneys at 158% which with around 2% triplets is about a perfect result for an outdoor system.
The numbers will not be less than this as Scanning just before lambing is very difficult to see triplets.
With the weather looking good for the next couple of weeks it looks as if we can start our holidays now that the ewes are lambing!!!

We are about 11 months ahead of all our neighbours, which must mean that we are very advanced
