Scanned ewes today and numbers are up about 5% on last year.

But 12% are triplets with a few quads mixed in.

Outdoor lambing flock and triplets are a pain really.

How are others scans?

Scanner man said been mixed, some about same as last year but a few back, one place 25% back for some reason.

Not mine but was speaking to someone that was well down, a lot of singles in chev mules, put it down to the lack of grass due to drought when the tups were in.

Only done a small january bunch but they were 10% down and nothing served first cycle 🤷🏻‍♂️
A lot of people 10-20% down with their February lambers though

We are slightly down from the last few years but more than happy also the tups only came out couple of days before scanning so out of the 14 barren usually half of them are in lamb when we scan the ewe lambs in jan

Normally about 220% I think. Last year was 5 triplets, 13 twins and 2 singles. The only thing I can put the increase down to is they ran on old permanent grass all summer then came home mid sept onto decent grass.
I had a bunch of 500 mules that I kept on 2 year ago old haylage all summer until 4 weeks before tups went a couple of years ago, I flushed them on dairy grass and they scanned at 245%!

The problem with going over 195% is you tend to have more triplets than singles, had this a few years ago where we had 194% but the split was all over the place, something like 30% triplets, 20% singles and 50% twins, it was a lot of extra work adopting triplets off etc. far easier with 60% twins, 25% singles and 15% triplets

Best scan for about 8yrs on the early flock, been around 145- 160%- that flock is really effected by our usual dry summers, but we've had a good growing summer here this year, made hell of a difference.

Also about 1/4 of the ewes were pulled out the main flock and moved to the earlies, so lambed last april, weaned early aug, back to ram early sept, they scanned just as well!
