Scanning and fasting

Scanner coming tomorrow evening. Will fast ewes from early morning,
Have straw in the feeders atm.
Will that be enough fasting time?
Just afraid straw might break down slower than hay/silage and might need more fasting time. Not sure. Thanks

Normally pull them off turnips onto bare grass paddock overnight here, reckons they are easier to scan when not stuffed.

Mine come in from grass fields at lunchtime and are scanned about 5pm. My scanner has never asked for them to be fasted. I bring them in early just so they don't make such a mess of the scanner mans trailer.

I try to house mine the night before, so their bellies are more empty and make the job easier all round (including on the sheep). It’s not always possible though, and sometimes have to do a bunch of ewe lambs in a mobile yard in the field. He seems to manage ok, just easier if they’re empty I think, especially if they are fat ewes and/or trying to do them early.

I’d have thought taking the off straw in the morning should be fine.

Never fasted any, standing housing for 1/6th of the flock so it could never work. 2-4/120 triplets will have 4, 2-3/600 will have triplets when scanned for twins and never have twins for a single scanned ewe.
I expect scanners get used to it but when their used to doing 1500+ a day all brought in at point of scanning or scanning in the field their in they must get used to it like that?

Easy flocks to scan are still accurate even when full, just harder work, tough flocks to scan are less accurate and really hard to scan. Easiest way to empty feild ewes is just to pen tem behind a temp electric fence in a corner of the field. Bearing in mind they don't have to be emptied right out like for shearing, they just have to be not full.

What do you mean emptied out for shearing

Good animal welfare is empty ewes for shearing, it is too hard on the sheep to have a full belly, we're not allowed to shear them full here, I presumed with the UKs high animal welfare standards the same would apply over there?
I wish people would empty sheep for shearing but with so many places moving round the paddocks shearing as we go its maybe not practical for all but plenty places we shear in a shed and they still wont empty them. Grudge paying for the sawdust.?

it’s so frustrating. One customer has 1400 sheep through his shed between hoggs tips and ewes abd we get half a dozen feed bags of sawdust :mad::mad:

with scanning I try to have as many inside or at least in a tight paddock the night before. Makes it easier and quicker for man and beast.
