Don’t know why people get so bent out of shape at what people charge for jobs… he’s self employed he can charge what he bloody wants… if you didn’t ask him how much before hand that’s your own fault pay the bill and suck it up butter cup don’t ask him back next year there’s always somebody cheaper who will do it for next too nothing in every job

Recently got my scanning bill from new man,He charged me £1 for the first 50 and 60p for the remaining251.Some of my friends had a good laugh and swore to engage a scanner from outside Dumfriesshire! In future! so would you say he was trying it on?
What did the old man charge?

Did you not think to ask him his rates before you engaged his services, and before you maligned him and his work, for you, online?

"Trying it on?" FFS, I would say you're being parsimonious. If he's reading this, your scanner should tell you that you're tighter than a ducks arse and to scan your own f'ing sheep next year, after you pay him what he's due 😘

What do you do off your own farm for others? What do you charge for travelling, working in shitholes, having your time wasted by disorganised people?

Paid 50 pence a piece this year, came twice first time set up to do a neighbours and I walked sheep through gate to him. 2nd time he came from neighbours a mile down road set up scanned just over 300 and was gone in little over 1½hrs. Better still I think I can count on one hand how many aren't as he said.

Been that bad?
The actual lambing wasn’t that bad and considering they were all theaves they behaved quite well.
I have a knackered knee (an old rugby injury) I don’t have an ACL or any cartilage in my right knee and the pain from all the walking about and doing the sheep was unbelievable. I’m going to have to have a replacement put in at some point in the near future, so I will go back to running dry lambs around and probably put some cattle in one or two of the yards.

Unless it's a regular customer, there's got to be a minimum charge to cover the basic costs. My one neighbour was asked to round bale for someone he'd never dealt with before. 12 miles of crap roads to get there and did 17 bales. Bloke phoned next day to ask him to do another field.
To right. Why should the contractor have to fit the bill for people being small or inefficient.

Only a small flock 120 ewes, scanner man charged 50p/ewe, same man every year, 100% accurate. Does me on the way or back from bigger jobs. Must be organised and ready for him or he'll get annoyed (quite rightly). Try to pay him more but he won't have it.

Hope your not implying that small is inefficient?
My scanner man has a minimum of £55 +vat , Always try and work it that he does them when he's passing, backs his crate up to an already full pen and crack's on with the job, usually on his way in about 45 minutes unless we talk to much
Good service and never grumble about the bill

99% sure we have the same scanner. Over the past 6 years and 2500 ewes he has got one wrong in my memory.

Always find them punctual and you won’t meet nicer folk, worth a lot too.

Dumfriesshire?
What you've been charged is the same as I was... I wonder if it's the same service?

If it is - it's a bloody bargain as they are excellent at their job. If you don't like it, go elsewhere but you'll not find a better scanning team

I had to call my scanner in to do an additional 60 because I had been disorganised and late bringing them home from tack, he charged me his usual 45p per ewe, I’m not wealthy by a long stretch but I know what it is to work off the farm daily for little reward, I gave him £50 cash on top of what I owed for his trouble. I think people tend to undervalue themselves in agriculture.
