Scanning time

Out of 1100 ewes our scanner probably misses a triplet every second year on average, and normally a couple of singles in the twins but that's not necessarily his mistake, ewes can occasionally lose one of a litter.
Whenever mine is scanned twins and 1 appears I usually find a dark blob in the afterbirth or a bird like foetus in the afterbirth, so there was 2 there when he scanned..
Like below. Usually 4ā€ long. You can work out the jaw and ribs in this picture and the legs are tucked up but if your gentle you can unfold it all

155% for January lambers, lower than Iā€™d like. 1 of my pure Suffolks empty, was more gutted by it, than the poor scanning. Only have 6 pures.
Ewe lambs to scan at Christmas. Rams only in for 4 weeks. Donā€™t know what way I want them to go. Last year only a third were in lamb but made a tidy profit on empties as fat, bought too dear this year for that to work I think

Scanned the pedigree flocks & recips this morning, due from the end of February.

140 Charollais ewes scanned 177% (inc 9% empty, 4 of which had been ā€˜given another chanceā€™ last year )
23 Charollais ewe lambs 167% (none empty, 4 bl**dy triplets!)
14 Beltex ewes 129% (1 empty)
41 Highlander recipients, all implanted with single embryos, scanned with 88% conception rate.

Incidentally, among the empty Charollais ewes were 3 who lambed OK last year but had been given ā€˜another chanceā€™ at one stage previously. A lesson for the lenient there?

Overall, very pleased. Hopefully got on top of the Iodine deficiency problems weā€™ve been having in recent years.šŸ‘

Still in now! Usually get half dozen lamb later but most will lamb in 14 days as teaser tups were used. Think had 5 empty last year so a bit disappointed this year.

[emoji23][emoji23] guessing your not too fussed on lambing dragging on then? The 9 empties probably in lamb but not showing yet lol

I never understand why people get so obsessed with taking the tups. I would rather have late lambs and than empty ewes.

Labour cost of lambing, uniformity of lamb crop age. Tups out after 21 days here.

If keeping home beef replacements then only retain then from first cycle to drive fertility. After that, raddle tups or change breed.

If lambing lasts 3 months thats 2 and a half months extra of straw... corn... hay... checking every half hour... staff too cover nights... then thereā€™s lambs all being at different stages for ovivac and worming.. ewes being at different stages for heptavac pre lambing... some people work elsewhere too so donā€™t want too be off work for 3 months lambing 20 sheep that didnā€™t catch until the bitter end...

I can understand not caring how long lambing takes on a hill farm scenario but not for most others
