Scanning Twins in cattle

At what age should a scanner man be able to pick up if a cow is having twins or not???

We put bulls out on 21st June and the 10th if June to the heifers, we scan usually around the 20th of December!

We scanned for 0 sets of twins this year yet we have already had 8 sets out of 120 cows with another 50 still to calve

If very heavy in calf then would struggle to see 2, just a big mass, but scanning when you do they should show up easily .

scanning will only be accurate up to 110 - 129 days for twins, after that they drop to deep in the cow to say anything other than pregnant or not. I had a set missed at 115 days after insemination so always aim to scan before that

That's to late to scan and find twins I'm afraid.

All smaller than you would like but te cows have only been getting fed as if they were a single!

Most out of our Angus X cows from our BBxLim bull

Time to grow... :)

I had a conversation some years ago on the merits or otherwise, of breeding for twins beef calves out milky Suckler cows.

Nothing was ever really decided other than it had the potential to be financially beneficial, but at that time, more breeding work would need to be done to get easy calving calves with good growing potential...

Like many, we do have a few quiet and very maternal cows on whom we can sometimes get a 2nd calf onto them which is always good to see.

Had 4 sets of twins out of 35 cows calvd so far. None picked up by scanner even though I asked her to look out for them . We scanned late October after bulls went in 23 June. Have been told that after 10/12 weeks the calves move to one above other so scanner can only see that cow is in calf but not see any multiple. Not sure whether been spun a story or not

We've had four sets of 45 so far, but that's about the normal for us, what do people put it down to? For us it no particularly bull or line of cow. Talk to some farmers that have never had a set of twins
