Scanned 293 ewes, easycares either bred pure or crossed to Nz Suffolk

67 singles
182 twins
35 triplets
9 empty
Works out at 183%, fairly sensible I consider. Quite pleased, apart from the number of empties. 5 of those were yearlings so could be tempted to give them another chance.[emoji848]

How do you tell if there inlamb to AI or the tup?
The tups ran for 24 hours, it is not possible to attribute all lambs to the AI process, however the tups did not have a significant window in which to cover the ewes and they had been 'jumped' a number of times before they were turned out. The tups were not interested the following morning after the ewes had been AI'd at 2pm the previous day.

O I see,I was just wondering as I've not had anything to do with AI since college. And that was quite a while ago!

Scanned today:

239 NC Mules

13 Triplets
171 Twins
50 singles
5 barren. 180%

Happy with number of barren. A few too many singles. Would have liked to have been closer to 190% but I have brought lambing forward a month so that may have impacted.

Scanner said I should be happy- he said he has done some dreadful scans this year!?

We scanned our Mule, Texel x Mule and Suffolk x ewes yesterday

0 = 19 (2.7%)
1 = 160 (22.4%)
2 = 460 (64.3%)
3 = 76 (10.6%)

total 715 @ 183%

Well down on our 10 year mean (196%) so bit disappointed really. However not many triplets so should make for an easier lambing. We had a dry Autumn and didn't have that much grass at tupping - did that affect scanning results?

We just scanned 95 red deer hinds this morning. 4 empties but the best bit was that all except 2 or 3 look to have held in the first cycle so lots of early May calves to look forward to. Brilliant help from some mates; 2 hours, job done.
might be a bit thick, but are they scaned like a sheep or a cow do they cope with the stress of being handled ok

112% for ewe lambs. Too many twins, a triplet and way too many empty. 175 all in of which 53 were empty.

I'm not familiar with cattle and sheep scanning but ours are internal scanned with a scanner that measures foetus size and tells you how many days pregnant the hind is. It would normally be done 40- 60 days after taking the stags out but because my scanning man was too busy earlier on we were late doing them the foetuses were too big and too far over the pelvic wall to take an accurate measurement but were well over 100 days. They are done in a hydraulic padded squeeze crush.
As for stress the deer come through the handling system quite often for weighing, worming etc so do not really get stressed up by it. If we can do 95 in 2 hours it shows that the flow is uninterrupted. We were also taking an ear punch DNA sample and putting in electronic tags within that same time.
But for sure, having some really useful friends helping is the key. big strong lads with lots of common sense and stock skills. I would be lost without them.
