Scanning

There’s probably a topic somewhere but can’t find it.

Many people started doing ours next week. Ewes have lost some condition since tupping due to lack of grass

Did some January and February lambers the other day, scanned ok, trying to slim them down now as a few BCS 7/8’s in them and they’ve been on poor wetland for the last month.

There’s a thread tupping 2018 (or 2019) or it may’ve changed name to lambing 2019.

Scanned my flock today, not happy.

Far too many singles and ewe lambs have struggled to get into lamb.

Excluding ewe lambs Im at about 150%, of the empty ewes over half have been shearlings from one farm I bought 2 lots from. Trips are running at about 7% of total ewes which has "helped" a little.

Spoke to my vet this afternoon and he is going to do a free check from Enzo and Toxo to see if anything rumbling around in the back ground. But he said the scan results hes heard so far are on a par with mine due to lack of grass at tupping so no flush effect.

My ewes were bolused pre tupping and in OK order, but little grass in front of them.

If he’s testing, I presume you don’t vaccinate already? That’s a hell of a gamble if you are buying anything in imo.

Enzovac wouldn’t normally cause any issues by scanning date (that comes after) but Toxo certainly can.

I assume they were tupped fairly early if scanning now, so still during the drought? I’m hoping those tupped/tupping on grass after the rain came, will go some way towards making things up here. I got my 68 December lambers in yesterday, from 110 that were tupped/AI’ed in the height of the drought in July. Makes for an easy life and lower feed bills I suppose....

I think it was a reference to how easy it must be to farm where the grass never stops growing.
@Jerry would have a similar climate to me but warmer in the summer, it’s not all Rosie..... no fly strike for 8 weeks as it’s been to wet so hopefully that’s the end of it for this year!

My ewes are in good form this year but weight loss programmes have never been an issue!
The commercial ewes would be more 3.5-4’s with obviously the odd 2.5 and 5.
The gingemong flock of charolais and texel’s are different class of animals. Singles and rescanners currently grazing 3 acre moorland they’ve been on for 8 weeks, their slowly slimming down.

If you two can lamb outside in February, the lambs won’t be knocking around through much of the summer anyway....;)
January*, last year I went ruthless and was even leaving BFL’s out. Ended up tubing and putting 5 BFL’s into warming boxes for 6 hours at 4 weeks old after the snow hit. Survival of the fittest etc....
