School dinners: Beef off the menu as costs rise

I have met people that have never eaten lamb (not because they are vegetarian) Just because they don't know how to cook it or know how it tastes. If meats like Beef, Chicken, Lamb and locally grown veg drop off the school menu we may never get them back.
Costing pressure are meaning UK grown foods are losing out. Be a shame if we lose the upcoming consumers just because they have never had a roast dinner or a lamb chop and mash.

You get school meals ?

we had to make do with a stale Vegemite & cheese sandwich we brought from home about 4 hours earlier . . .
As long as there are some Tim Tam Biscuits in that pack up it will do :)
Yes, some schools do breakfast too, it's a way to make sure the kids get at least one good balanced meal a day. then if it's a pizza for tea at least there had a few veg and goodness to balance things out.
Or that's the hope.

Bad do if they can't afford to buy mince and do a shepherds pie.

Where are they getting this expensive beef from?
The report said it had gone up 11%. 11%!!! For the love of God, how is anyone supposed to cope with an 11% increase in price?!?!?! Sack the govt, call the Army in, declare Martial Law.

Best not tell them how much fert’s gone up. Or diesel. Or feed. Or fence posts. Or spare parts (if you can get them). Or sprays ….

Doubt the school kids will miss it too much. Pizza chips and pasta is the mainstay of what they eat nowadays even with the reformed turkey twizzler free school dinners they have nowadays. They tried to do a meat free Monday at the step daughters high school. The kids were up in arms and it was done away with within 5 days...the school were too dull to realise that what they were eating was basically meat free anyway!
My step daughter would be vegan I think but her biggest issue is she doesn't like fruit or veg 😂

I can’t imagine these meat free days are exactly a cheap option either knowing how they like to dress things up.
baked potato filled with baked beans and grated cheese, meat free and cheap, having said that, I think the biggest problem we have with "meat free mondays" is, it puts the idea into the young that there is something good about going meat free, so for that reason alone it should be kicked into touch.

I think all school meals should be ultra processed food free, to try to at least give the young one healthy meal a day.

Why has beef jumped so much finish price not exactly flying, surely grain fed pork should be dearer than beef🤔
Perhaps the cost of everything involved in getting it to the customer after it leaves the farm has gone up?
I don't pay much attention to it, has the beef cattle price price gone up in the last 12-24 months?

Cindy and Co have started a school meal trial for some primary schools here, my kids school being one. Local companies get the contract and deliver to each school everyday. Not always a hot meal though, sometimes wraps and stuff. Its actually not bad. I was against the idea a wee bit but its probably the best meal some of the poor buggers get, although getting them to eat it can be tricky.
They have a breakfast club 3 days a week too.
