Did ours today. Have tried other things over the last few years due to the price of rotavac but have bitten the bullet as nothing has stopped it. Did get a good deal from the vets as well

I used Rotavec Corona this spring after losing 18 calves in a row.

Also turned the cows out so they weren't in the shed anymore, but after around a week we didn't loose any more calves with diahorea.

Did a deal with the vet and I think it was around £7.50 a cow.
Had the same trouble but could see what was happening , had trouble the year before , bought a cheap thermometer from boots , when we thought we had trouble took their temp , injected with metacam and drenched and took temp next day , all was good and they soon got over it , a couple needed another small dose of metacam but we never lost any.

Not ideal and we did the cows with the vaccine the next year but we seemed to find a few still got scour but metacam worked with electralites

Locatim is aimed at Ecoli problems , just 60ml bottle given to calf at birth,POM so need a vets prescription. Fivemiletown pharmacy the cheapest I have found 16 GBP a dose.
I give a dose to anything I am not 100% sure had enough colostrum, sometimes spilt a bottle, never seen scours in five years at least.

I had a look at fivemiletown pharmacy and it turns out they're a lot cheaper than our vets where we also have to collect the drugs. Assuming they are ok to deal with and deliver ok etc?

We've had a bit of an outbreak with about 25 left to calve so thinking of ro tavac for those scanned to calve august onwards and have some locatim ready for the 8 or so due to calve now plus moved them onto a grass paddock near the farm. Any other tips?

Sounds good. Plenty of colostrum and good hygiene.

Quick question on this subject!

If you have a calf scouring would it always likely be caused by the same strain of E.Coli???

Or would it be wise to get it checked before thinking of vaccinating with Rotavec???

Only reason I'm asking is we calved 130 last year inside and they went outside within a day or so but had a handful (7 or 8) that scoured once they were outside (10 -14 day old). Most recovered themselves but 4 had to get brought in to get treated.

We had maybe 3 or 4 that scoured before going out due to bad weather so inside for maybe 4 days old!

Never thought our numbers were high for what we calve but been thinking on it more recently as we are calving around 160 this year and always helps to try eliminate jobs!

Always do best to make sure everything sucked on time and always deep clean straw bedding too

E. coli will only cause disease in the first 5 days of live, beyond that the gut loses the receptors and it cannot cause scour. It is a specific type called ETEC, enterotoxigenic E. coli.

At 10-14 days old the most likely culprit would be rotavirus or coronavirus.

There is merit in testing as there is no point using the vaccine if the scour is caused by something else.

I have always been led to believe that an opened container of Rotavec should be used the same day.

But a New Zealand website says:

STORAGE

Store between +2oC and +8oC. Protect from light. DO NOT FREEZE.

A partially used pack can be kept for use for up to 6 weeks if the following steps are taken:

1. Carefully remove the bottle mounted gun from the stopper.

2. Disinfect the stopper by wiping it with a clean cloth soaked in methylated spirits.

3. Store the vaccine bottle in its original cardboard carton and place upright in the refrigerator (2-

8C). DO NOT FREEZE.

4. Re-use with sterile equipment.

Not on the UK data sheet:

Store and transport refrigerated (2 °C – 8 °C). Protect from light. Do not freeze.
In use shelf life: 8 hours.
You can use it between 3 weeks and 3 months from calving, if you can't use up a 5 dose bottle in that time you really need to look at herd fertility......
