I was once told that the scrap metal price was one of the more reliable indicators of which way the economy was heading, it was usually about a year ahead of the curve. I never checked it out but there is a certain logic to it.

If scrap price starts heading for the floor ,a recession is coming

do we use much of our own scrap, where do we melt it do at ?

Mainly exported. Most of British steel industry (TATA) up for sale or threat of closure still producing at Port Talbot and Rotherham. Scunthorpe generally uses iron ore rather than scrap. Screwed initially by old outdated plant and practises now environmental legislation and expensive power. Goes to Turkey, India, China amongst others.

Countries without the stringent environmental legislation but have cheap power produced by fossil fuels. You gotta love it!
