Second hand plough

Thinking of getting a plough, currently getting a contractor in for around 100 acres/year. Quite shallow soils and a few stones, mainly grassland. What would you recommend as a second hand auto reset plough, budget around £4-5k
What sould I avoid?
Or stick to contractor!

A,,Relying on the contractor to come when you want them or when the weather is right .
B ,,What hp have you got for a 4 fr and go to it when you want if time permits .
Which option is best financially

What size of tractor have you got to pull it. I'd guess a 5 furrow would probably be about right for that acreage. You want to be able to get on with the job when the weather's good.

Also how much roughly is the contractor costing for that.

I have a 5 furrow for 750 acres a year. We had a 3 furrow till we passed 375 acres/year.

If you don’t have time to use a machine, don’t buy it, as it’s much cheaper to have someone else do it.

Here you get a much nicer and newer 4 furrow for the same money as a worn out 5 furrow.

For the op’s acreage it’s all about finding what suit the tractor and is value for money in my opinion.

3 furrow for 375 acres by you must have liked to watch paint dry . the most i did with 3 furrows was about 250 acres then up to 700 odd with a 4 then got a 5 which i still have now but use it less as the sumo dose quite a bit depending on the year and how much i feel needs ploughing .

It was. But the acreage didn’t warrant to get a bigger tractor and on hills it was all we could pull.

I’d like to get a cultivator of some kind and cut my ploughing in half. We had a vaderstad opus + tractor on demo last year as it was on tour in the neighbourhood. Too big for my tractor, but we did establish some maize without ploughing. It was the cheapest and fastest to establish and it’s yield was highest of all fields we had. So looking for options to demo on our own tractor this year.
