Second man dies after Monmouthshire water buffalo incident

Gwent Police has confirmed a second man has died following a farm accident involving water buffalo near Usk, Monmouthshire.

Officers were called to an incident at a smallholding in Gwehelog, Monmouthshire at around 2:50pm on Tuesday, May 5.

A 57-year-old man from the Gwehelog area was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics from Wales Ambulance Service.

A 19-year-old man from the Gwehelog area was taken to the University Hospital for Wales by the Welsh Air Ambulance after sustaining critical injuries. He subsequently died in hospital as a result of his injuries.

A 22-year-old woman from the Gwehelog area also sustained a serious injury to her leg. She received hospital treatment for her injuries, which are not thought to be critical.


The 57-year-old man has been named locally as Ralph Jump, who ran the 3ac farm. The 19-year-old man is understood to have been his son.


A spokesman for Gwent Police said the investigation into the incident is still ongoing.

Detective Inspector Amanda Venn said: “Our thoughts remain with the family at this tragic time. The family have asked to be given time to grieve and we would ask that their privacy is respected.

“The force is also currently liaising with the Gwent Coroner Service in relation to this incident.”
