Second wheat questions

Kerrin here as a 1st and 2nd wheat; getting harder to keep clean but will stay in the second wheat position as it usually can crack 10t/ha. Dawsum coming in to replace it as a 1st wheat-Costello parentage so will wait for some more data before that slides into 2nd wheat position. Start around 190kg 2nd week of October then 210 for 2nd wheats/early drilled spring wheat after beet (Chilham) then up to 250 for spring drilled

Grown some 2nd wheats here this year for the first time in a while, reminded me why we don’t, they are not good crops !

seems occasionally we all need reminding why we do or don’t do the things we do !

I have done exactly the same, with exactly the same result. Hopefully I will learn my lesson this time.....

anything that ever goes wrong on a zerotil farm is obviously always down to not cultivating ……….. because crops were ALWAYS perfect when we ploughed of course

latitude seed dressing not needed from mid october onwards if the seed has low fusarium levels no need for any seed dressing
if treating with a stack then high seed rates are essential thick stands can be managed but thin crops are often become un managable

straw from high yielding first wheats need baleing or mixing in with maxitillage

id rather edge on the lesser risk approach & use latitude & a good seed dressing
weather can change very quickly here from mid Oct every year to your disadvantage big style.
Plus none of it had any agchems until later in March this year. nor fert of any sort.

Second wheats here are very bad for take all, I grow triticale anyway and have noticed that it doesn’t seem to suffer at all. So, depending on your use for the crop, maybe triticale as the « 2nd wheat »?

I’ve got a lot less take-all (virtually none that I’ve picked up so far) in my 2nd and 3rd wheats than I have in my 1st wheats and none of the land is what you would call good second wheat land………




…. but the firsts aren’t really true first wheats as they follow rye.

never thought of rye, or triticale, as take all breaks for wheat

2nd wheat does well here , it's 3rd 4th 5th 6th that can go tits up , after that you're fine

Rye is a good 2nd cereal . Early harvest and then either OSR or stubble turnips before Maize . Harvested Today 21.9 ton/ acre @ 33% Dry matter over a weighbridge .
Bodes well for wheat and barley

Yes, I know it wasn’t the idea rotational choice. It was just the best of the available options and even with the level of take-all it will beat all other options (bar rape, but that’s quite a gamble here now)

Depends a bit what the £ per ton is? Obs its probably commercially sensitive, but at 80p per ton per % DM its not very attractive.

Would have to be. Thats what was on the table in the east mids for AD feedstocks before the grain price went crazy. Id look again at £1.40/t/%dm.

Have you managed to keep it clean this year? I had some good yields with gator in the past aswell
