Security lock on sliding doors

Dear Steevo, thanks for the reply, I have this at the moment, 2 bits of angle iron with holes, but was trying to think of a locking system that will resist a cordless angle grinder

Or if you want to get really technical it might be possible to lock the runners somehow on the top, spring loaded bolt operated by a cable maybe, just a thought

Did see one of the sea container lock shields could withstand 10 angle grinder disks, but the design suits hinged doors not sliding doors, as the padlock cover closes over the padlock buckle as you swing close the second door. Completely agree, just really trying to slow them down or turn them away because it is too difficult.

A friend of mine had a steel door with hidden hinges, frame made from thick angle with smooth sheet steel on the front, roof felt on the back then 18mm sheet ply on the inside. This was after they cut through the door before. They attempted again some time after the new door was made as people replace tools with new so they try get a second helping. They failed at getting in due to the felt bunging the disc up and not being able to cut through the wood. Theives will always try and sometimes will find a way in. But the harder you make it the more chance they will give up.

Fit an alarm with a magnet sensor on the doors.
Fit a PIR sensor behind the locked door and facing any vulnerable direction.
Fit a Master Blaster.

As soon as the doors are opened the noise will be tremendous. Fit a high noise speaker near the alarm as well and any enclosed space with valuables in.

If the barn is remote fit a GSM alarm to dial you awake. CCTV might help as well.

If feeling adventurous could fit a vibration sensor near the lock (Usually put on windows) and Strobe lights.

Hardware should come in at less than £200.00

Love the shipping container covered locks but suited to hinged swinging doors rather than sliding doors.
Nothing to stop you using the container security locks on sliding doors as long as they slide together straight with not too much slack in them, the flip over catches used on drop side trailers are good for fixing to the none locking end of a door, either drill hole through stantion or weld a plate to it for catch to fit through, so you can slide 1 door closed flip over catch on inside then come outside and slide other door closed and lock the 2 together

On each girder at the sides, make a strong door Bolt of 20mm rod, weld on so it goes outwards into the door, this holds the door from sliding open or closed,
Now on end of the bolt, weld a T on end out of 20mm rod about 50mm long, this T needs to be at 90 degrees to the handle of the bolt, so when the bolt is pushed out to lock the door and turned down the T on end of bolt is horizontal,
Now get a plate of 150 x 150mm by 8 mm thick, in middle of plate make a slot 22mm wide, and 75 mm long, clean off the rough edges,

Close the doors, offer the plate to door, slide bolt through plate and put the handle downwards, , the slot in door plate needs to be vertical, tack weld plate to door,
Try it to see it is smooth to lock and unlock, if so weld it up,
Then after locking the door, with handle, pull door back tight to girder , and weld plates either side of handle to stop bolt moving back and forth, have holes in them plates to take a padlock,

The bolt will not only stop the door from sliding, but will also stop the door being pulled out or leavered out with a bar to gain access, as the T pulls on the plate this also stops the bloody doors rattling in the wind,

Once done, simply take padlock out, lift handle 90 degrees and pull back, door will open, reverse to close and lock,

If one big door, fit one each end, if 2 smaller doors, fit 1 to each door,
On 2 doors together make 3 eyes for the middle, weld 2 to one door and 1 to the other door so when closed a bolt or a pin can be dropped in to hold them securely together

Lots of good ideas - I would only reiterate that a padlock without a substantial box to protect it is an utter waste of time and money. Box should be made from 10 or 12mm plate. Angle grinders are effective but (obviously) noisy - if a site is remote, then an alarm is really a necessity.
Also, think about security of wall sheets - Tek screws are not secure unless the hex heads have been removed.
