Seed barley

I’m planning on sowing some spring barley and ringing around I was advised by one company (probably because that’s all they’ve got left) to use kws irina, after reading about it it’s saying it’s more a brewing variety....just spoken to another merchant and he advised using planet in this area....also the first firm advised the seed being treated with manganese at an extra £40/T
Please bear in mind i am clueless regarding arable....do I need manganese and are these varieties suitable....many thanks

Morning Northeast....all decent enough suggestions but I would also consider Laureate or even LG Diablo. Whereas the malting homes for KWS Irina are limited and Planet only suitable for brewing Laureate would also suit the Distillers and considering your location would give you more options and Laureate has the edge on yield too. LG Diablo looks suitable for distilling and brewing also and a lot interest has been seen in this new variety, especially in Scotland.

Give me a PM if you need any Laureate or LG Diablo we have some available albeit it would be easier to apply the Manganese to Laureate stock left in a bin against the LG Diablo which sits on the floor in 500 kg bags treated with a single purpose treatment. In your region Manganese is certainly a benefit.

Hi poacher...thanks for your reply...I have no interest in growing it for malting....it will all be used on my own stock

The same suggestions would apply as the varieties mentioned are higher yielding than those that are classed as just feed varieties.
ADHB Recommended List ( Northern Region ) Treated Yields of the Malting / Distilling varieties are

LG Diablo 107% The HIGHEST yielding variety in the North
Laureate 104%
Planet 103%
KWS Irina 102%

Feed Varieties

Scholar 104%
Ovation 102%

Have a look at the recommended list and make your own choice without the sales pitch. I don't think you need a manganese treatment.

All suitable for feed. We have Planet going in

I would largely agree with Poacher, most malting varieties yield as well if not better than feed varieties. Irina has the advantage of better standing ability. The one variety not mentioned by Poacher is Tomahawk a feed variety and just behind Diablo from a yield perspective … would probably be cheaper than the malting varieties.

Irina gone in here and I’m impressed 12-14 days it’s through and quicker in other places. Growing well, lush green really motoring and hasn’t looked back. Very impressed and looking like it’ll be going in next year also. Did struggle to source one last bag to get another field in.

Looks a beast of a crop [emoji123]. Had the field had a lot of dung or was fert down spout , or anything that makes this your best crop ever .

We missed the rains after applying our fert last year for weeks so it sat on top , out malting barley ended up with less than half the straw of normal. Thankfully the yield didn't suffer as badly .
