Seed prices

A few tramlines worth of my better spring barley left unsprayed, hand rogued and put through our cleaner will be all I will need for drilling this coming season.
Selling at £120 and buying back at £300 plus doesn’t appeal.

Spring barley is relatively easy to keep clean of weeds - winter wheat isn't quite so simple, especially with a season like last when almost no autumn sprays were applied.

Don't forget the £50/t or so royalty payment.

Overall, the cost of seed per hectare is minimal compared to everything else we spend on a crop in total.

Spring barley is relatively cheap and easy all round. It’s never really let us down like wheat and OSR so it’s becoming the safe option here. Works well for us particularly with newer better varieties. Keeps us clean of blackgrass and brome. A good caretaker option I think so we can free up time to do other things.

But you can still halve your seed costs for pretty much the same outcome and in the case of OSR massively reduce seed costs
