Self Defence Law

Hi everyone never posted before but been reading since the start and before on the old British farming forum.
What’s made me post is just to get the views from other parts of the country, at minute here in deep dark Lincolnshire it seems like everyday of the week we’ve got a different set of lad/hare courses/ gypyies driving around no regard for anything on the occasions I’ve attempted get near to them I’ve been rammed multiple times and on one instance had ball bearings catapulted at my truck!
The police seem to be power less and on the few occasions they’ve actually turned up in time or at all they’ve questioned the culprits then just let them go! I’ve worked abroad in the past in the US and there was never anything like this due to in my opinion their superior self defence laws and local police response.
Is it time we demand better laws over here in this regard especially in rural areas where police are already stretched and have no chance in attending any rural crime in any useful time frame? Even if it’s to allow us to use non lethal means such as pepper spray etc? Sorry for the rant I just feel that out here in the sticks we’re being forgot about in terms of policing and it feels at times we’d be better policing ourselves!

It’s totally unacceptable. Wouldn’t be quite so bad in Cambs mostly but have heard instances very similar to yours. Keep ringing the police. Complain to PCC if they aren’t doing their job and your MP. Boring but ultimately the only way to get things to change?

Hi, l dont think we have cracked it here in the East riding of Yorkshire but we seem to get plenty of these poachers in court, for a number of years the police have worked with farmers and land owners to crack down on this, yes they dont catch them all but by working with the farming community they try to keep on top of the job, try to get your farming friends together and invite the police to a meeting, tell them what the problem is, try and work together it does work.

Not sure anywhere’s cracked it unfortunately but they seem to be above the law around here! Just frustrating we can’t do more ourselves!

As tempting as it may seem confronting these people can have serious consequences, remember nothing is more important than going home to your family, and often reprisals against your buildings and machinery.

The two lawful options are basically make your farm less appealing than your neighbours (harsh but that’s life) and petition local MP / Police Commissioner to be more proactive.

Allegedly if you want to go down the more direct approach you need to leave them in no doubt you are more bat sh!t crazy than they are and that any further encounters are likely to see you keeping their ears as trophies and having regular sex with their corpses. Anything less may just antagonise them to take revenge. But I would suggest that is quite a fine and dangerous line to walk.

Any mileage in getting a local area what’s app group going of like minded ( and those with the same problem ) people ?
Any shenanigans going on could be curtailed maybe if everyone was supported at the same place and time.

We fenced on a farm that was getting people in the yard a buildings regularly, the farmer (sadly now deceased) got stick of this and would run out the house wearing a crash helmet, chase them while screaming and hitting his helmet with a crow bar.
his idea was to show them he was crazy. It did work for so long

This is what concerns me the most, especially thinking that they could turn up at the house when the other half is there on her own. I think we might try the local MP route as that’s something we haven’t done before. We have a local WhatsApp group but I’m not sure it really achieves much apart from being extra eyes on things!

friend of mine got caught up in manchester at uni getting near mugged by a few Asian guys, he stripped off naked infront of them which scared the living sh!t out them and they ended up doing the runner. He isn’t wired right though.... so not for most of us

But in all intense and purposes what can we legally do, because im sure as hell not happy to let someone walk in and take what ive worked hard to earn, and wait a few weeks for someone to get round to issuing a crime number for me to spend weeks arguing with an insurer who is going to short change you or try and weasel out any way that they can. Scary times, and if you sleep with a weapon near your bed its premeditated. not quite sure how it is because theyre not dropping you a business card with an appointment time that theyre going to break in and tie you up. I was told by a friend let them get what they want dont interviene but if you need to you need to have proof they were going to do you more damage than they were going to you, dont beat them if theyre on the floor etc which is unfair, but if theres 4 of them and one of you think your options of using overt force may help or it may backfire on you. If you take a weapon out your more than likely to have it turned upon you and these pikeys arent going to be carrying a butter knife and plasters.

Use laser pens and bird scaring or firework rockets at the dogs. Piece of drainage pipe means you can aim them. Your excuse chasing pigeons.
Keeps you far enough away but lots of noise and sparks which most dogs other than gun dogs don't like.

When I was in Mexico there was a massive amount of car jacking at lights, 1 or 2 on a motorcycle would pull up at a car at the lights point a gun and them and steal wallets etc. One day another driver saw it happen and as the motorcycle took off he accelerated across the intersection and ran the motorcycle over killing on of the riders, it made the national news, the next day 5 motorcycles got run down and then 10 and so on, within 10 days the robberies had stopped.

Trouble is in UK if you tried stopping a crime in this way you would be the criminal and be told you should have phoned police and let them sort it 🙄

That is what happened in Mexico as well, the drivers all got charged but there were public protests and the charges eventually got dropped.
