Self feed dry cows

Looking at a potentially different possibility next winter and self feed dry cows might be an option.

Does it work for spring calving cows and what do I need to put in the pit to stop them getting too fat.

They wouldnt calve self feed which would reduce the milk fever issue.

All of ours are on self feed , dry cows have oat wholecrop and 2nd or 3rd cut and Youngstock plus fresh calfers from now will be no 1st cut, rarely have any milk fever ,but will have the odd fat cow(this year, 2 out of 160), this is on a spring block.
