I agree; however it’s a criticism often levelled at them selling live, anywhere outside of ashford. Was wondering if this was true of the Scottish/Border area… be very relevant to me if I were to take my flock north

You will find many of the Romneys in the Borders are strong sheep with cleaner heads than many of the older Waiere fuzzy heads.
A lot have been crossed with the Cheviots.
Having sent many sheep to the Borders over the years and still send quality tups up every year, you will find that Romneys make better prices than down in the south.

They're a great maternal ewe, a wonderful base for a maternal composite and a brilliant low capital entry into stock.

Ewes work great put to an easy lambing terminal. But if you breed them pure, then you get pure wethers, which are nearly worthless. Also pure ewes will struggle to scan above 140%.

Cross them with a lleyn or a chev or an easycare for a good maternal ewe and better quality wether.

Forgot to add, they're perfect for a low input early lambing flock to catch the Easter trade.

Suffolk lamb born over the weekend. Following well for an 800m road move. Should be 40kg+ by end of April.

Lleyns. Unless your upland is really high hill ground. Or Cheviots. Lleyns more prolific, Cheviots better carcass. We have both.

From last year, that's a draft sheltand on right with 2x Apr born easycare x ewe lambs at the end of Jun.

Feed them well and they perform.

It did cross my mind that it's all very well having your Shetland x lambs ready for Easter but you've still got to get it in the trailer!

Ah that's no trouble. For all our other faults, my Mrs and I have a decent dog team.
