Selling cows at market

Hi, i am new to this and I am just after abit of help. I have a small holding and have entered a few Angus steers I have in bakewell market on Monday. I have never taken any before though and I’m wondering how you go on. How do you go about unloading and penning up? What happens to the paperwork? How do you tell them how you want them selling? And what do you do whilst they are being sold? I know this might sound stupid but it’s my first time, any help will be greatly appreciated!!

Ring the auctioneer beforehand, explain first time and ask who to meet on site when you arrive
Drovers will usually help you unload and pen up
You will have to stand behind the auctioneer in the box when they are selling
If you have a rough idea of price,Dont show it!!
Hmm and Haa if the bidding gets near and ask auctioneers to try a bit more
Could wave a few quid luck money at that point too

Hi. It’s pretty well organised at Bakewell, if there stores reverse up to the unloading bays on the right hand side. Let them out into the unloading pen, or if your not confident someone will soon be along to help. They will sort the paper work and you just tell them how you want them selling.

The drovers at Bakewell are a grand bunch. they will take your cattle from the docks, lot up and sort them for you no messing. Just make a note on your entry form how you want them selling.
But don’t expect the store cattle auctioneer too talk too you! And make sure you are strict that he hits your reserves and doesn’t miss bids. Honestly, you must watch he doesn’t just get bored and knock them down.

Do people ALWAYS specify how they want them sold?
Done both in the past
They are my cattle so I pick how I want them sold. 🤷🏻‍♂️ That’s the way I was taught too do it and that’s how I’ll stick. Unless I’m specifically asked too pull out a single I’ll always try and get pairs or trios. I don’t sell enough store cattle too manage it as much as I’d like.

Absolutely, thats fair enough.
Times I have just entered cattle and let the Mart sort, I have not been disappointed.

How big a group would people make numbers up to?

I’ve seen ring fulls in Scotland! Pretty sure someone posted a picture on here last year of 25 suckled calves going through in 1 lot at Fort William last back end?
