Selling machinery by auction

i would suggest we would only take either listing fee or commission once (seems fairer to me !).

should buyer or seller pay though ?

Depends what the % fee is.
No one likes paying big % fees for any thing in life ,
that's why a very small fee for both gets unnoticed
more than a large fee for one.
Buyers and sellers at auction have got used to this system now
but the % fee has to be right.

my thoughts would be certainly less than 5% should be possible with a capped upper level

or you could have a listing fee and a even smaller buyers premium maybe ?

@Clive this is the one slightly frustrating thing I have found about sourcing tractors and machinery in the UK compared to at home in Ireland. There is no one stop classifieds/advertisement website. A mix between TFF, Farm Trader, Ebay and Farm Machinery Locator.

In Ireland we have this https://www.donedeal.ie/farming?campaign=14. They have the format, GUI and ease of search spot on.

Would be great if the TFF Classifieds became the one stop shop for UK Agricultural Items and Tractors/Machinery!

I'd be interested to know how much stuff actually sells on tff. Personally I've never even had an enquiry about anything I've listed.
But I do sell things almost daily on Facebook. With identical adverts.
Have to admit i rarely look at TFF classifieds unless looking for something specific (or just information).
I and many folks will just browse through Facebook ads or they appear on your news feed, much like the original TFF ads did. Just for interest and you occasionally get tempted by something.
Had 10 enquiries about a combine i was selling within 3 days of advertising on FB and it was sold.

An auction would have been nice (for my combine) however unless you police the payment side what will stop someone bidding high then arguing the toss when they view/ collect and offering you less. I believe this is common when selling cars on Ebay.

I am on TFF pretty much everyday and never go to the classifieds anymore. Find it almost unusable.
Registered but not really a user of Facebook other than for looking at and occasionally buying/selling stuff on their machinery for sale groups. Almost the go to place for private machinery sales now I’d say.
Have to say I’ve got a 100% success rate selling there and 100% fail from here.

This is meant as feedback not criticism. I am sure it can be done given your can do attitude @Clive:)

Sold quite a bit and bought quite a lot. How do people work Facebook? I’m sure I miss a lot do you have to search all the groups every day?

I've bought a fair bit on TFF
I find sellers very genuine and had some really good deals . But more importantly good kit and product
Personally I hate buying at auction
I'm looking for a digger atm
I already looked at 6 machines, taking my time and will buy when I find the right one for me, I won't be put under pressure by buying at auction . Buy in haste, no thanks

I would say a fixed listing fee is the fairest way, if the seller doesn’t like the amount then he won’t list it. If you have a buyers fee it will hold back people from even thinking about bidding. I only ever think about listing something on eBay when it’s “free listing” or “ max selling fee £1” so I would suggest not to charge too much as you will struggle to get enough users.

The last item I listed on here, was a good condition Hi-Spec muck spreader. No interest what so ever. Sold it on FB.?‍♂️

There's been at least 2 revamps of the classifieds, each time making it more difficult to list items.
Also, in the early days you had @Thick Farmer 's farmers spring sales etc which was more interesting than looking at reams of dealer listings for new Fendts ( for peasants like me anyway ) Hints at how to improve things are met with " It's free, so take it or leave it ".
I used to scan classifieds regularly. Don't bother any more.

What are people's thought of online auctions? Do you trust them?
Personally when I look at any of them and it says reserve not met I just scroll on.
Brown&co online as a good example. They only sell a very small % of lots. Waste of everyone's time.

I have used them and had good experiences so far. Ref the reserve not met, if the auction allows you to bid below the reserve and you want the item it is still worth bidding as if unsold the auctioneer will often contact you to offer the lot at the end. It depends on the circumstance of the sale and how keen the vendor is for cash.

They need a good app , you can list things in seconds on Facebook, behind the times I'm afraid , but I suppose the cost would be horrendous

I personally wouldn’t buy a high value item from a online auction without viewing it. Online auctions have a place but for lower value items.
